Abby had her 12 month appointment yesterday.  She has gained a whole…12 ounces in the past month, so current stats are as follows.

Length::28 inches
[[17th percentile]]

Weight::17 lbs, 3 oz
[[1st percentile according to the charts the doctor uses, 2.6 percentile according to the website I’ve been looking at.  Either way, she’s staying about the same, so the doctor’s cool with it.]]

Head Circumference::17.75 inches
[[50th percentile]]

Weight-for-height::13th percentile

Abby’s been having a lot of fun pulling up on furniture, Mommy, boxes, walls, & crib rails.  She’s discovered there are things above the floor [like cell phones, remotes, & laptops], which are just asking to be pulled off the coffee table!

DSC_4826.NEF

Abby likes to explore the house too, crawling under whatever furniture she can, like tables & chairs, & into small spaces, especially to find her bibs, which are fun toys.  She also tries to crawl into her car seat to play with the toys on the handle.

Abby still loves to eat, especially dessert!  She loves yogurt, cheese, & ice cream, but whole milk doesn’t seem to agree with her little tummy just yet.  [She kept spitting up after having an ounce or two of milk. ] We’ll just keep on with full-fat cheese & other dairy, & the doctor said to wait a few weeks, then give the milk another try.

In addition to whatever signs Abby knows, she is starting to say ‘words.’  Well, sounds that seem to be associated with specific things:

‘dadada’ for Daddy
‘mamama’ for Mommy [when she’s crying!]
‘ba-ba,’ signs ‘milk,’ or points to her bottle when she wants milk
‘wawawawa’ when she’s getting a bath
When she saw the stuffed kitty she got from her Great Grandpa & Grandma for Christmas, she whispered ‘cat,’ & we’ve heard her say ‘dog’ too.

22 Jan 2012 Just Say No…

… To Unions.

A guy from SEIU came to the door this evening claiming to be from the hospital. Sarah woke me up from a nap, and I went to see who it was. A soon as I answered he announced where he was from. I cut him of right there and said that I was not interested in joining a union, and closed the door on him mid sentence. I guess he made the rounds today, because he visited a friend of mine after leaving here. She got his card, but basically told him the same thing.

My question is: where did he get my address? It’s not like it’s hidden or anything, but I didn’t give it to him. It’s not public at work. So how did he get it?

Which brings me to what I’m really posting about. The lab is a meritocracy. Without merit, we have nothing. I hear and see how others in unions perform their jobs, doing the bare minimum to get by. And why not? If your job security and wages are not based on what you do, who cares if you don’t go out of your way. Your boss won’t look at you for a promotion, you won’t get any bonuses, so why try harder?

I have made it clear in past posts that I’m Republican. As a Republican, I don’t believe in unions, not that they necessarily go hand in hand. I think they had their place in history and have their place in developing countries, but not in a professional setting.

Would I feel that the union were totally bad if Minnesota were a “right to work” state? Probably not. Unfortunately, since it’s not, if a union were voted into the lab, I would have no choice but to become a member. Unwillingly, of course.

I’m not willing to give up my rights as a solitary employee to become a small part of some communist collective I had no real choice in joining

So I guess what I’m trying to say here is: SEIU — LEAVE ME AND MY WORK ALONE!

Now back to your regularly scheduled pictures of Abby.

On January 19, 2011, after [what turned out to be] my last night of semi-uninterrupted sleep, I went to my 37 week appointment.  Everything looked good & normal.  No dilation or anything.  Since I hit the 37 week mark, I got the ‘all clear’ as far as having the baby & set my next appointment for the following week.

I had a whole list of what I needed to get accomplished that day:  the usual cleaning & laundry, along with de-Christmas-ing the house & getting some baby stuff done.  I was already out, so I grabbed a bagel & an amaretto Italian soda from Dunn Bros. & armed with my list of what sizes I needed to stock up on, made my way to Babies R Us to hit up the baby clothing clearance sale.  I found some cute 3 & 9 month outfits to get us a start on those sizes & got an extra 40% off [w00t!] & then headed to Target to update the registry, post-showers, since we would be getting an extra 10-or-whatever-% off everything left on the list.  After a disastrous attempt to update it [for some reason, my password that worked perfectly fine online did not work in the store.  Fantastic.], the girl at the guest services desk talked to the helpful people on the phone & got it reset so it worked in the store.  [FYI, she still remembers me when I go in…that’s how much of a fiasco that whole event was.]  I finally got the registry updated & some grocery shopping done, then went home to tackle some laundry.  I wanted to add some more online-only things to the Target registry too, &, lo & behold, neither my new nor my old password worked.  Super fantastic.  So I got to spend another half hour on the phone arguing with target.com about my password.  At least I could still get clothes washed at the same time…??!?

While the laundry was wrapping up, I started some more baby stuff:  sorting her new clothes, blankets, & towels to be washed; sorting & organizing the rest of her gifts; & sorting cards & gift receipts & finding the duplicate gifts [impressively, only 2 or 3 items!].

I was making decent progress around 6pm, with laundry running & a good chunk of baby stuff taken care of, when…um, what was that?!

Aaaand, my water broke.

Weirdest.thing.ever.

After I determined that this was indeed what had happened, I came downstairs and told David, “Um, I think my water just broke.” We called Maternity Care and they told us to come in right away—they thought they’d be able to find a room for us. How reassuring. We packed our bags kind of in a daze, while David referred back to my book on what to bring to the hospital.

from Welcome, Abigail Grace, in which you can relive the rest of our exciting experience!

**Spoiler Alert::we had a baby.**

One year ago today, I was just wrapping up [what turned out to be] my last shift at Aerie, pre-Abby.  I was really excited because I only had 13 shifts left until I would be officially on maternity leave—since I was due on February 5, I had decided that my last day would be Thursday, February 3, so I could put in a full week & have Friday & Saturday off.

Tuesday, January 18, was the first [& only] time I wore a maternity top other than a t-shirt that looked absolutely no different from any other t-shirts I own.  I was doing some mapping for the weekly update & holding the packet of papers in front of my stomach.  I set them down to help a customer, & she was like, ‘oh my goodness, you’re pregnant!  I didn’t even notice!’ & was super-surprised to find out I was due in 2.5 weeks.  The girls I worked with tried to figure out what they would do if I went into labor at work, which I assured them I wouldn’t…after all, I was going to be done working a couple days before my due date and everyone* knows you don’t go early with your first baby.  They also started making a list of guesses of when I’d have the baby, the earliest being February 10.  I left work excited for my day off the next day, when I would have my 37 week appointment & GET ALL THE THINGS DONE, like thank-you notes from my showers, cleaning & laundry, & baby prep:  baby laundry, organize other baby things, more baby shopping, etc.

*  Dear Everyone,
Apparently you only know MckMama & my mom, who had their first babies 2.5 weeks late, because c
learly you do not know, um, pretty much ANY of the people I know.  Who [almost] all had their first babies early.  And not just like a day.  More like a week or two or more.  Try again.
Love, Sarah.
P.S.  Just kidding.
P.P.S.  But seriously, I do know a ton of people who had their first babies early.

17 Jan 2012 happy birthday [party], abby!

Due to our work schedules, we had Abby’s birthday party on Saturday.  My family came down for the weekend [as opposed to that weekend last year, when we went to Fargo for the baby shower].  On Friday night, my parents, David, Abby, & I went to Famous Dave’s, where Abby attempted to eat as much of my meal as possible.  Apparently she also enjoys Georgia Chopped Pork & Drunkin’ Apples.

I made 10 dozen mini cupcakes that night & frosted them in the morning [along with decorating] while Abby napped.  NOM.

Abby was not terribly thrilled that I woke her up for [horrors!] a bath before her party, but she quickly cheered up when she realized that everyone was still there to play with her.

After delicious tacos (courtesy of David), Abby got to open her presents!  She was very excited about all of them, especially the cards…who knew that cards were so fascinating & delicious?!

Then it was cake time!  I had 3 full sized cupcakes, so Abby got one of those.  She was not too sure what to do with it; she knew it was food, but she wasn’t sure where to begin until I broke it in half for her.

DSC_4727.NEF

Then she shoved half of it into her mouth and INHALED the cupcake.  NOM.  She got a little messy, but probably about 90% of it ended up in her mouth.  Plus I think that’s kind of the point of a 1 year birthday party!

DSC_4771.NEF

Saturday evening, after church with David’s family, Abby got her first restaurant meal for herself—grilled cheese at Panera!  She ate half of the sandwich [we saved the rest for dinner the next day] & all of the yogurt.  How she is still in the 2nd percentile, I have no clue.  Girl can EAT.

DSC_4796.NEF

Thanks to all who came to Abby’s party &/or sent gifts…she loves all her new toys & clothes & books & she’s excited to actually turn 1 on Friday!

03 Jan 2012 eat more chocolate; drink more Dr Pepper & Caribou.

Every year most some years I try to make New Year’s Resolutions, which I then promptly ignore.  Sometimes I make it through January & I think I’ve even made it through about April once, but it’s like resolutions are meant to be broken, you know?  Except for those 2 I mentioned in the title.  I think I’ll do okay with those.

So this year, I’m going to set some goals for the year.  Not the ‘every day I’m going to jog 12 miles’ kind since, let’s face it, I don’t jog at all, much less every day, much less 12 miles.

Then we’ll see how it went at the end of the year.  Maybe.  Unless it went horribly, in which case I will delete this post and no one need ever know…muahahaha!

1. Read more books & Bible stories to Abby, now that she’s a little older & kind of understands words.

2. Update the blog every 2 weeks, minimum.

3. Sew a thing.  Going for a quilt, but completing any one project will satisfy this goal.  Other than a fabric flower, that is, since those take about 5 minutes and I do by hand.  I also saw a really cute tree skirt on a blog I read which I’d like to attempt too.

4. Read all the books I got for my birthday & Christmas this year:

SV Confidential [Pascal]
Longing [Kingsbury]
9/11 series [Kingsbury-reread]
Forever Faithful [Kingsbury-reread]
Hunger Games [Collins-reread]
Marie-Grace & Cecile [American Girl series]
Love & War [Eldridge]
The Male Factor [Feldhahn]
Possession [Gutteridge]

+ catch up on at least 1 series of unread books from my collection.
[basket contains books I’ve started &/or borrowed that I really should try to get through this year too!]

IMG_0052

5. Catch up on at least 1 TV series [some options:  Chuck, House, Bones, HIMYM.]

6. Clean & purge, room by room [including closets].

7. Play more Wii Fit + go for walks with Abby this spring/summer/fall.  That is my version of working out.

8. Keep up-to-date with photobooks &/or scrapbooks for Abby.

9. Bake more things [use the fun chocolate, etc. chips I liberated from the chocolate, etc. chip collection at Dave & Karen’s house!]

10. Think of a 10th item for this list.  Play with our camera & learn more about all the fun things it does + learn more about photo-editing.

So.  I guess I’ll be busy.  Good thing I have so much free time with working 40+ hours/week, [attempting to do] housework, & having an almost-one-year-old little girl!
