02 Feb 2012 eat more chocolate; drink more Dr Pepper & Caribou::february.

February update on my list of what I want to accomplish this year + a note on the title::I have managed to get 40% of my drinks at Caribou for free.  WINNING!

1. Read more books & Bible stories to Abby, now that she’s a little older & kind of understands words.

We’ve made it through at least a few pages in her Jesus Bible Storybook. [God just told Noah to build an ark.]  Then she sees toys and gets distracted from the pictures.

2. Update the blog every 2 weeks, minimum.

Seem to be doing well on this front so far.

3. Sew a thing. Going for a quilt, but completing any one project will satisfy this goal. Other than a fabric flower, that is, since those take about 5 minutes and I do by hand. I also saw a really cute tree skirt on a blog I read which I’d like to attempt too.

I have a week off mid-February, so I’ll start Abby’s quilt then.

4. Read all the books I got for my birthday & Christmas this year:

I’m crossing them off this list if I am over halfway through, as they will be completed by the end of the month.

SV Confidential [Pascal]
Longing [Kingsbury] note:  halfway through
9/11 series [Kingsbury-reread] note:  halfway through 1st of 3 books
Forever Faithful [Kingsbury-reread] note:  1st of 3 books read
Hunger Games [Collins-reread] note:  halfway through Mockingjay, #3 of 3 for those of you not up to speed on all things YA Lit.
Marie-Grace & Cecile [American Girl series]
Love & War [Eldridge]
The Male Factor [Feldhahn]
Possession [Gutteridge]
Lost Love series [Kingsbury-reread]  forgot to include this in my initial list.  halfway through #2 of 2.
Ruby [Snelling]  I got this free for my nook, so it’s being added to the list.

+ catch up on at least 1 series of unread books from my collection.
[basket contains books I’ve started &/or borrowed that I really should try to get through this year too!]

IMG_0052_thumb2

5. Catch up on at least 1 TV series [some options: Chuck, House, Bones, HIMYM.]

Haven’t started yet, but I heard Bones is on Netflix, so I think that’s what I’ll do, unless anyone wants to check out my amazon wishlist & get me missing seasons of other shows!!

6. Clean & purge, room by room [including closets].

Will start this on my PTO also.  I have boxed up most of Abby’s 3-6 month clothes, if that counts for anything.

7. Play more Wii Fit + go for walks with Abby this spring/summer/fall. That is my version of working out.

I weighed myself on the balance board.  That counts, right?

8. Keep up-to-date with photobooks &/or scrapbooks for Abby.

I used my free/discounted photobooks to finish up Abby’s first year::already had winter/spring 2011 [0-4 months] & summer 2011 [5-8 months], so I did fall 2011 [9-10 months], & winter 2011/2012 [11-12 months] along with one with my pregnancy photos & updates.  So doing well so far.  Not sure how I’ll do this year, if I’ll do 4 again, or drop down to fewer.

9. Bake more things [use the fun chocolate, etc. chips I liberated from the chocolate, etc. chip collection at Dave & Karen’s house!]

Cupcakes for Abby’s birthday party count, right?

10. Think of a 10th item for this list. Play with our camera & learn more about all the fun things it does + learn more about photo-editing.

I downloaded some [free] lightshop presets & took pictures.

and now, what you’ve all been waiting for::Abby being adorable!

play with all the things

29 Jan 2012 David’s History of Mobile Phones

I have seen posts on different forums and other places where people recount their history with mobile phones. I decided to take that journey today and found it difficult to find some of the more obscure phones that I owned. I have found model numbers and pictures for every phone I have owned.

1998-1999 – Motorola M3288 – Aerial/Voicestream

This was a tough one to find. If you search for “aerial” and “phone” together with anything else, you get a lot of hits for antennas. Not very helpful. Luckilly, I found Golden Phones that claims to have the largest directory of phones. I got this phone when I was a senior in High School. I can’t remember if I got it before or after Christmas. I talked my parents into getting it because Aerial had no contract, and it had the cheapest phone plan at $19.99 a month for 100 minutes, or something ridiculous like that. Also, I told them I would use it for safety, and I could take it to college. I remember going to youth group and forgetting my phone once. There was a horrible accident involving a wrong-way driver just before my exit in Rochester, and my mom couldn’t get a hold of my sister and me, so she was a bit worried.

1999-2000 – Nokia 5100 – Aerial/Voicestream

I purchased the 5100 series Nokia phone sometime during my freshman year of college. I remember using one of my roommate’s discount at Office Max or Depot or one of those places. Again, another plus of Aerial was that you could buy a phone anytime, because you had no contract. Of course, that made the phones relatively expensive compared to other companies because there was no on-contract pricing. This phone was great. There are some great memes right now about how strong this phone and others like it were. You could throw this thing against your house and the house would break, not the phone. Whereas, new phones, like the iPhone, break apart just by looking at them. This was the first phone I had with SMS…back when it was free.

2000-2001 – Ericsson R280LX – AT&T

This was the first phone I had with “Internet” on it. I wouldn’t really call it that. It had news in text form, that was it. You could also make ringtones on the phone, something you couldn’t with other phones. One thing it didn’t have was SMS.

2001-2003 – LG TM510 – Verizon

This was another tough one to find. Reason being, it is before the common naming that all LG Verizon phones have now, with models starting with a VX. This was another workhorse. I loved this phone. It had analog mode, something my other phones didn’t. Problem was, Verizon’s digital network would go down sometimes, and I’d get stuck in analog overnight. Analog uses way more power than digital, kind of like 4G uses way more than 3G, so my phone would be dead in a matter of hours, instead of days (yeah, standby used to last that long back in the day).

2003-2004 – Nokia 3650 – T-Mobile

You can see I switched companies around a lot. That’s because you used to not be able to get a new phone with your current company without paying an arm and a leg. That changed about the time I got this phone. I got this phone because it had a camera, and was one of the most powerful phones of the time. It had some great features, and even removable memory (16MB SD). This phone was not as strong as the 5100 was. I remember about a year after I got it, if you touched it or set it down hard enough, it would knock the battery out of place, and would reset. T-Mobile replaced it under warranty. I still have this one somewhere.

2004-2005 – Motorola A630 – T-Mobile

The warranty replacement for my Nokia still couldn’t hack it. There were so many problems with the phone, I eventually went to buy another one. I was still on contract, but apparently T-Mobile now let their customers get a discounted phone after a certain amount of time. This was the first time I remember that. I was still more expensive than being a new customer, but it came with a bluetooth headset, and was one of the best they sold at the time. I picked this one because of the keyboard, and bluetooth. I had just started dating Sarah, so we texted and I talked to her with the headset, because I couldn’t get a good signal in my parent’s basement, where I was living at the time. I think this was the first phone I could use USB to my computer with to add ringtones. Since the Nokia had an SD card, I could just pull that out to add ringtones.

2005-2007 – LG VX8100 – Verizon

Right before we got married, I switched to Verizon so we could have a family plan. It was way cheaper than having two separate plans with separate companies. Another good phone. This one was the first one I had with what is now “3G” on it. I didn’t pay for it though, so it really just used my battery. I remember this as the first phone I tried to update myself…not a good idea. I bricked my phone. Luckily, this was before people were really doing stuff like that, so Verizon just replaced it. This one could also be connected with USB to a computer, and I could download ringtones to it using a great piece of software called BitPim. I could sync my contacts, pictures, and tons of other stuff. Eventually, this phone was given as a hand-me-down to Sarah’s brother Timothy. I believe this phone actually made it to Germany…

2007-2009 – Motorola KRZR K1M – Verizon

The original Motorola RAZR and family of phones (RIZR, KRZR) were great, slim phones. I wouldn’t really call this an “upgrade” from the VX8100 though, and I often wished I had kept that phone. Verizon decided to put the same BREW interface on ALL of their phones. It was ugly, and annoying. I guess it made for a similar user experience over different phones, but each phone had different features. The VX8100 had a tip calculator that I used all the time, while this one didn’t, even though the software looked the same. The battery was also an issue. I don’t remember having issues with other phone’s batteries, but this one was replaced twice.

2009 – BlackBerry Storm – Verizon

My first smartphone, if you could call it that. This was during BlackBerry’s huge takeoff. Verizon had a BOGO on BlackBerry’s. Sarah was due for an upgrade, so we went in. Unfortunately, we both needed to be eligible. I think I used one of her brother’s upgrades (Timothy’s while he was out of the country?). I loved this phone at first. The power I could wield from my hand was immense. This all changed when I realized what a mess this phone was. It took a few months, but eventually it just didn’t work the way it should anymore. Email was about all it was good for. And the Garmin app I bought for $80 was also pretty good. It pretty much stops there though.

2009-2011 – Motorola Droid – Verizon

Since I didn’t use my upgrade to buy the Storm, I was able to use it to buy the OG Droid. This was a great phone when it first came out, but was quickly eclipsed by other phones only a month or two after its arrival. Of course, now that I was on my own upgrade schedule, I had to abide by it, or pay ridiculous amounts of money to upgrade. I loved the phone for the first year, but by the second, I was already looking for my next one. It really wasn’t good for anything except email. Even then, it wouldn’t work sometimes. Twitter? Forget about it. Facebook? If I could get it to load, it might work for a minute or two. It’s anemic RAM and processor were just no match for newer models. It was a great phone to hack. I still have it, and it still works on WiFi. What for, I’m not sure, yet.

2011-present – Motorola Droid RAZR – Verizon

Verizon really had a weak release schedule in 2011. There were really no contenders that came out in the first half of the year, followed by a ton of phones that replicated each other. I was really waiting for the Galaxy Nexus, but I couldn’t wait. When they set a release date for this phone (11.11.11), I pre-ordered it so I could pick it up on release day. It has the same specs as the GNex, plus removable storage. The battery is the first to be non-removable besides the iPhone. It has it’s moments, but I’ve got it set to my liking now. The battery can last all day, as long as I switch to WiFi or stay on 3G. If I use 4G, it will be dead by afternoon. 4G just sucks that much power. I’m please with my purchase, and it should be able to last me until July/August 2013 when I can buy whatever the latest and greatest phone is.

Abby had her 12 month appointment yesterday.  She has gained a whole…12 ounces in the past month, so current stats are as follows.

Length::28 inches
[[17th percentile]]

Weight::17 lbs, 3 oz
[[1st percentile according to the charts the doctor uses, 2.6 percentile according to the website I’ve been looking at.  Either way, she’s staying about the same, so the doctor’s cool with it.]]

Head Circumference::17.75 inches
[[50th percentile]]

Weight-for-height::13th percentile

DSC_4820.NEF

Abby’s been having a lot of fun pulling up on furniture, Mommy, boxes, walls, & crib rails.  She’s discovered there are things above the floor [like cell phones, remotes, & laptops], which are just asking to be pulled off the coffee table!

DSC_4826.NEF

Abby likes to explore the house too, crawling under whatever furniture she can, like tables & chairs, & into small spaces, especially to find her bibs, which are fun toys.  She also tries to crawl into her car seat to play with the toys on the handle.

DSC_4839.NEF

Abby still loves to eat, especially dessert!  She loves yogurt, cheese, & ice cream, but whole milk doesn’t seem to agree with her little tummy just yet.  [She kept spitting up after having an ounce or two of milk. ] We’ll just keep on with full-fat cheese & other dairy, & the doctor said to wait a few weeks, then give the milk another try.

DSC_4846.NEF

In addition to whatever signs Abby knows, she is starting to say ‘words.’  Well, sounds that seem to be associated with specific things:

‘dadada’ for Daddy
‘mamama’ for Mommy [when she’s crying!]
‘ba-ba,’ signs ‘milk,’ or points to her bottle when she wants milk
‘wawawawa’ when she’s getting a bath
When she saw the stuffed kitty she got from her Great Grandpa & Grandma for Christmas, she whispered ‘cat,’ & we’ve heard her say ‘dog’ too.

On January 19, 2011, after [what turned out to be] my last night of semi-uninterrupted sleep, I went to my 37 week appointment.  Everything looked good & normal.  No dilation or anything.  Since I hit the 37 week mark, I got the ‘all clear’ as far as having the baby & set my next appointment for the following week.

I had a whole list of what I needed to get accomplished that day:  the usual cleaning & laundry, along with de-Christmas-ing the house & getting some baby stuff done.  I was already out, so I grabbed a bagel & an amaretto Italian soda from Dunn Bros. & armed with my list of what sizes I needed to stock up on, made my way to Babies R Us to hit up the baby clothing clearance sale.  I found some cute 3 & 9 month outfits to get us a start on those sizes & got an extra 40% off [w00t!] & then headed to Target to update the registry, post-showers, since we would be getting an extra 10-or-whatever-% off everything left on the list.  After a disastrous attempt to update it [for some reason, my password that worked perfectly fine online did not work in the store.  Fantastic.], the girl at the guest services desk talked to the helpful people on the phone & got it reset so it worked in the store.  [FYI, she still remembers me when I go in…that’s how much of a fiasco that whole event was.]  I finally got the registry updated & some grocery shopping done, then went home to tackle some laundry.  I wanted to add some more online-only things to the Target registry too, &, lo & behold, neither my new nor my old password worked.  Super fantastic.  So I got to spend another half hour on the phone arguing with target.com about my password.  At least I could still get clothes washed at the same time…??!?

While the laundry was wrapping up, I started some more baby stuff:  sorting her new clothes, blankets, & towels to be washed; sorting & organizing the rest of her gifts; & sorting cards & gift receipts & finding the duplicate gifts [impressively, only 2 or 3 items!].

I was making decent progress around 6pm, with laundry running & a good chunk of baby stuff taken care of, when…um, what was that?!

Aaaand, my water broke.

Weirdest.thing.ever.

After I determined that this was indeed what had happened, I came downstairs and told David, “Um, I think my water just broke.” We called Maternity Care and they told us to come in right away—they thought they’d be able to find a room for us. How reassuring. We packed our bags kind of in a daze, while David referred back to my book on what to bring to the hospital.

from Welcome, Abigail Grace, in which you can relive the rest of our exciting experience!

**Spoiler Alert::we had a baby.**

One year ago today, I was just wrapping up [what turned out to be] my last shift at Aerie, pre-Abby.  I was really excited because I only had 13 shifts left until I would be officially on maternity leave—since I was due on February 5, I had decided that my last day would be Thursday, February 3, so I could put in a full week & have Friday & Saturday off.

Tuesday, January 18, was the first [& only] time I wore a maternity top other than a t-shirt that looked absolutely no different from any other t-shirts I own.  I was doing some mapping for the weekly update & holding the packet of papers in front of my stomach.  I set them down to help a customer, & she was like, ‘oh my goodness, you’re pregnant!  I didn’t even notice!’ & was super-surprised to find out I was due in 2.5 weeks.  The girls I worked with tried to figure out what they would do if I went into labor at work, which I assured them I wouldn’t…after all, I was going to be done working a couple days before my due date and everyone* knows you don’t go early with your first baby.  They also started making a list of guesses of when I’d have the baby, the earliest being February 10.  I left work excited for my day off the next day, when I would have my 37 week appointment & GET ALL THE THINGS DONE, like thank-you notes from my showers, cleaning & laundry, & baby prep:  baby laundry, organize other baby things, more baby shopping, etc.

*  Dear Everyone,
Apparently you only know MckMama & my mom, who had their first babies 2.5 weeks late, because c
learly you do not know, um, pretty much ANY of the people I know.  Who [almost] all had their first babies early.  And not just like a day.  More like a week or two or more.  Try again.
Love, Sarah.
P.S.  Just kidding.
P.P.S.  But seriously, I do know a ton of people who had their first babies early.

17 Jan 2012 happy birthday [party], abby!

Due to our work schedules, we had Abby’s birthday party on Saturday.  My family came down for the weekend [as opposed to that weekend last year, when we went to Fargo for the baby shower].  On Friday night, my parents, David, Abby, & I went to Famous Dave’s, where Abby attempted to eat as much of my meal as possible.  Apparently she also enjoys Georgia Chopped Pork & Drunkin’ Apples.

I made 10 dozen mini cupcakes that night & frosted them in the morning [along with decorating] while Abby napped.  NOM.

DSC_4554.NEFDSC_4616.NEF

Abby was not terribly thrilled that I woke her up for [horrors!] a bath before her party, but she quickly cheered up when she realized that everyone was still there to play with her.

DSC_4569.NEF

DSC_4600.NEF

After delicious tacos (courtesy of David), Abby got to open her presents!  She was very excited about all of them, especially the cards…who knew that cards were so fascinating & delicious?!

DSC_4628.NEF

Then it was cake time!  I had 3 full sized cupcakes, so Abby got one of those.  She was not too sure what to do with it; she knew it was food, but she wasn’t sure where to begin until I broke it in half for her.

DSC_4727.NEF

Then she shoved half of it into her mouth and INHALED the cupcake.  NOM.  She got a little messy, but probably about 90% of it ended up in her mouth.  Plus I think that’s kind of the point of a 1 year birthday party!

DSC_4771.NEF

Saturday evening, after church with David’s family, Abby got her first restaurant meal for herself—grilled cheese at Panera!  She ate half of the sandwich [we saved the rest for dinner the next day] & all of the yogurt.  How she is still in the 2nd percentile, I have no clue.  Girl can EAT.

DSC_4796.NEF

Thanks to all who came to Abby’s party &/or sent gifts…she loves all her new toys & clothes & books & she’s excited to actually turn 1 on Friday!
