16 Dec 2010 oh the weather outside is frightful.

I couldn’t tell you anything about whether the fire is so delightful, as I didn’t get to see it…but I guess Bones was scared of the fan in the fireplace!

As I’m sure everyone’s heard, we are maintaining our wonderful Minnesota winter weather.  For the past 4 weekends, I believe, we have had some type of freezing rain, snow, blowing snow, or blizzard going on.  I have been fortunate enough to get to drive from Farmington or the MOA to Hugo at least once during each of these fun weather situations!

Side Note:  I just looked, and it’s actually been 5 consecutive weekends with ice and snow!

Our wonderful snow began on Friday night.  Since I had to work at 10 on Saturday morning, I figured roads should be relatively plowed; enough to get by, that is.

This was my first problem.

Our association uses a fantastic snow removal service that consists of 2 pickups with plow attachments, a bobcat or 2, a couple snow blowers, and a bunch of people with shovels who speak varying degrees of English.  As we have a rather LARGE development (consisting of 4 townhome neighborhoods, a school, and single family homes beyond the school), to say this is inadequate is quite an understatement.

David ‘got’ to dig me out of the 2-foot piles left by the plows in the street.  Fun.  So it took about another half hour before I got out of the neighborhood.  I managed to get to work okay, despite being able to see only part of one lane most of the drive down (and that was before my windshield wipers were mostly ice!).  I was not too excited about my impending drive back home that afternoon, or coming back the next morning.  [oooh, foreshadow-y.]

For those of you who think people would tend to stay inside during a blizzard, you are correct to an extent.  The morning was quiet (while people were presumably digging themselves out), but people in Minnesota have a strange desire to shop during severe weather.  If it’s just cold, they may or may not come out.  But if it’s a snowstorm, they will shop.  Trust me, after 8+ years of working in retail, I know.  And come on, it’s the Mall of America.  We had plenty of visitor-types who wanted to shop, plus all the people who’d come to town for the Vikings game.  [cue ominous music]

About 1:30 Saturday afternoon, we were getting questions about whether the mall was going to be closing due to weather.  Around this time, I also got a call from David telling me he was getting me a hotel room for the night because he didn’t want me to have to make the trip home & back again.  A bunch of stores were already planning on closing early (2:30-4pm or so), so we were waiting to hear back from our District Manager about the possibility of our closing early as well.

Then mass transit and the airport shut down, or something.  So everybody came to shop!!  And who wants to sit in an airport or the hotel (they weren’t planning on staying at) in their regular clothes?!  We sell pj pants & sweats & undies!  It was established that the Mall would be closing at 6 (and you wouldn’t believe how upset some people were about the mall’s closing early).  Since I had a hotel room, the company would cover it & AE would get one as well.  Woohoo, party at the hotel!!  Um, I guess that means I need to get some pj’s and clothes for tomorrow…  And everything else.  Planning on looking really cute for work on Sunday considering I have no hair dryer, straightener, or brushEven though hotels typically have hair dryers, that’s not going to do a whole lot of good without a hairbrush.

There ended up being 7 of us going to the hotel, 2 of whom were picked up within a couple hours.  There was something like 2 feet of snow in the intersections.  Good thing I didn’t try to go home!

Instead of watching TV or a movie or something, guess what we did?!  Watch cars get stuck on the road, in ditches, etc!  And try to take pictures of them with cell phone cameras!

First we saw a little car get stuck.  Then a truck came and covered it with snow.  The people got out and went into the truck and they all left.  (This took place over about a 20-minute time period, after which we took an hour-long break from snow watching to eat.)

Then we saw a parade of 10 plows drive past, followed by a little car who zoomed past a couple of them and got stuck.  The plows kept going.  Serves the car right, I guess.

Shortly after the plows went through, we saw more cars get stuck.  On the newly plowed road.  Go figure.  One went in the ditch and the people came running out of another car with shovels.  To dig the car out of the ditch.  Right.  Let me know how that works out for you.

The black blobs in the snow are the people.  You can kind of see the car (far right, mostly covered by the roof of the hotel’s water park).IMAG0030

This car got stuck in front of the snow plow (far right).  Shoot.IMAG0031

This one got stuck shortly after that last plow went past and thought it would be a good idea to reverse out of the ditch.IMAG0032

Hey, at least we were entertained for the evening.

I’m pretty sure I usually look more put-together for my days off than I did for work on Sunday!  Sorry customers, I did what I could with hotel shampoo & conditioner, finger-combing, and bobby pins & a ponytail holder!

By the time I got home from work Sunday night (some 36 hours later), our street was plowed.  The same could not be said for any of the other streets in our neighborhood, however!  And the main-ish road was semi-navigable…one side was cars who couldn’t get to their homes (like I said, no other streets were plowed), and the other side was the trucks containing the snow-removal ‘equipment,’ possibly including the shovelers?!)

At least I had Monday off.

The view outside my door and living room window…after they finally came through to clear the sidewalks.  (They are snowblown 1 snow blower’s width.  Helpful.)

Those piles of snow on either side of the sidewalk are about 3 feet deep.  Bones is so confused; she can’t get to the grass or off the sidewalk!

The end.

P.S.  The Metrodome collapsed, in case you hadn’t heard.  [sarcasm]

16 Sep 2010 baby update part 1.

Part 1 simply due to the fact that I only have 1 “Watch Sarah Get Big (Maybe) picture uploaded.  There’s another one chilling in the camera, and still another one yet to be taken (in a couple days).

David came to my most recent appointment with me, and Baby showed off by doing crazy flips and somersaults while the doctor was finding the heartbeat.  She found it pretty quickly, but then Baby decided to move elsewhere!  I don’t think she was too thrilled about my weight staying the same through the past 3 appointments, but I assured her that (a) I was eating as usual plus whenever else I’m hungry, and (b) I was going to the MN State Fair in a few days and cheese curds were at the top of my list of foods to consume.

My family came down for Labor Day weekend, as has been our tradition for the past few years.  Melissa came up this year as well and got to experience the Great Minnesota Get-Together with us!  (That would be the MN State Fair, for anyone who hasn’t heard about our vast assortment of food-items-on-sticks).  Sadly, I do not have pictures of all of our deliciously healthy food items…Melissa, feel free to email me any pictures you have from the weekend!!

My delicious Uff-Da Brat:  brat wrapped in Lefse, served with Lingonberry “ketchup” (really just sauce).  I find it slightly sacrilegious as I believe lefse should be eaten with butter & sugar, but since I am not the one who made this lefse, I’ll go with it!

We went on a record-breaking attendance day…almost 235,000 people!

Stay tuned for part 2…more pictures!  Also, September 22 is my ultrasound!  Any guesses on what we’re having??  I already know that a lot of people are thinking the same thing, but let me know what your guess is!

28 May 2010 Meeting the Family
 |  Category: Miscellaneous  | One Comment

This past weekend, I went ‘home.’

I don’t really know what to refer to as what exactly anymore.  Obviously, my house is ‘home,’ but so is Fargo.  So bear with me.  In this situation, Fargo and my parents’ house will qualify as ‘home.’

Since I hadn’t been there in almost 2 months, it seemed like a good idea to visit, give out belated Mother’s Day, birthday, and graduation gifts to each member of my family who currently resides there, and it happened to coincide with the weekend Melissa, Timothy’s girlfriend (they’re ‘in a relationship’ on Facebook, so that must make it official!) was planning on being there, along with her whole family.  So it was a perfect time to meet her!

Timothy & Melissa

Here’s the two of them…in a gondola…in Venice.  Melissa has some wonderful stories and pictures of her trip to Europe to visit Timothy and meet the rest of my family on her blog (back in the January-ish time period).

We spent Friday afternoon with Melissa, eating at Taco John’s (a must!) and showing her around Fargo…our old schools, church, Timothy’s dorm, Grandma’s house, the river, and other exciting places of note.

Melissa also got to experience the Spiderweb, but then she went down to take some pictures of us and Dad decided to show us his climbing prowess.  Considering how dangerous this particular piece of playground equipment is, I’m surprised it’s still there at all, although it does not begin to compare to the amazing, double-peaked spiderweb of my youth!  (For anyone else who remembers this fantastic park, you will be sad to know that the Yogi Bear two-seated bouncy thing and the four-seated insect bouncy things are no longer there.  * Tear.)

Melissa’s family came over for dinner, followed by a walk to Lindenwood to check out the current state of the river (still high, for those who don’t know).

I had to cut my weekend a little short and leave Saturday after lunch so I was able to make it back in time for Kristen’s Master’s graduation from Bethel, but it was great to get up to Fargo for a few days and finally get to meet Melissa (and of course, her whole wonderful family)!

Meet Bones.

cutest

She’s a Lab/Welsh corgi mix.  Her full name is Dr. Temperance ‘Bones’ Brennan, from the TV show Bones.  She’s currently 4 1/2 months old.

We picked her out yesterday from the Humane Society.  Four of her siblings were also there (all very cute), and one of her brothers was adopted while we were adopting her!

When we brought her home, she enjoyed sniffing and exploring, but didn’t know how to go up or down the stairs!  She was trapped on whatever level we put her on!  This morning, however, she learned how to go up and down, so she is quickly growing more independent.

Her favorite things to do right now are playing outside (she loves snow!), staring at her reflection in the dishwasher and oven (and occasionally barking at that other puppy in there!), and playing with her toys.  She picked one of them out herself at Petco last night [the goose].

She’s also learning some new tricks (besides being able to go up & down the stairs):  she figured out how to jump on the couch and brought me David’s shoe from the front door.  Both of those tricks received a “NO!” in response, so hopefully she doesn’t keep those up.

I think this is Bones’ way of telling us that we should stop taking pictures of her!

29 Oct 2009 Wedding Bells at Northwestern

Congratulations Kate and Jordan!

1

Kate, one of my wonderful college friends, got married a few weeks ago in beautiful Nazareth chapel at Northwestern.  Despite going there for 4 years and going to multiple chapels, recitals, and having many tours through Naz chapel, this was the first (and, most likely, only) wedding I’ve been to there.

Kate was, as expected, a beautiful bride.

(Pictures via various facebook photo albums, as I didn’t have my camera with)

Marie was able to come from Denver and spend the weekend.  We had fun watching movies and having post-wedding pizza and ice cream!

Monday morning, we awoke to this:

snow 10.12.2009

Poor Marie’s flight back was delayed over an hour!

However, I can’t write a whole post about that.  So, let me tell you about a pre-wedding event.

A couple weeks before the wedding, Kate’s soon-to-be in-laws had a shower for her.  Since I had the day off, I decided I might as well go since it was only about 15 minutes from my house.  That was an exciting time.

It went approximately as expected:
awkward small talk with people I don’t know
eat food
more awkward small talk
eat more food
watch Kate open presents
still more awkward small talk
leave

I, if you didn’t notice, am not a fan of small talk.

(Goes with the territory of my apparent Myers-Briggs type, INTJ:
“[T]hey tend to have little patience and less understanding of such things as small talk [...]“)

I’m pretty sure every conversation I had went something like this:

Random Shower-Goer:  Hi, I’m [Helga/Bertha/LuAnn].  How do you know the bride?
Me:  I’m Sarah.  We went to college together.
RSG:  Oh, isn’t that nice.  So you know Jordan’s family?
Me:  No, not really.
RSG:  Oh…well, I’m [Marlene/Belinda/Sherry]‘s friend from church.  Our kids have been friends since birth.
Me:  That’s great.  I’m sure Kate and Jordan appreciate your being here. [That reference did not help me at all, since I don't know Marlene/Belinda/Sherry either.]
RSG:  So you’re from the Cities?
Me:  No, I came here for school.
RSG:  Oh, you’re in school?
Me:  No, I graduated a few years ago with Kate.  [didn't I say this earlier?]

At this point, the conversation would inevitably go in one of two directions (both if I was really lucky), either questioning me about my job and why I’m not using my degrees, or asking me about David, his job, and why we don’t have children yet.  Fantastic.

I must say, though, that the food was delicious, the hostesses were very gracious, and Kate received lots of wonderful gifts.  I just don’t like small talk.

16 Oct 2009 Last Days of Summer
 |  Category: Miscellaneous, Sarah  | Tags: ,  | 3 Comments

Once again I find myself having to catch up with all you readers my mother.  (Does anyone else read this?!)

My parents and brother came to visit us two consecutive weekends at the end of the summer.  The first weekend we went to the Walker Art Center (2 free tickets courtesy of Museum Adventure Pass, a program the libraries here are running).  The “boys” enjoyed climbing on the one thing people are allowed to climb on, especially Philip, who made it most of the way to the top, then slid down. (I’m not sure that this is an activity sanctioned by the Sculpture Garden, but nobody yelled, so I guess he was okay.)

IMG_1805 IMG_1807 IMG_1811

The second weekend they came down, we went to the MN State Fair, where we experienced a variety of culinary delights and some interesting people watching.

IMG_1832

While my parents and I were eating our Uff-Da Brats in the Food Building, the people sharing our “table” with us stared at us and our food, and asked what it was repeatedly:

“What’s that?!
“Where did you get that?”
“What’s in it?”
“Is it any good?

This final question was asked very incredulously.  Philip returned with his own food, Falafel-on-a-Stick, [this was after he had already eaten a Spam-Burger] where he was greeted with the same Spanish–Minnesotan?–Inquisition.  I take that back; they must have been from Wisconsin or Iowa.  Then my dad went to get some more food–fried smelt–and, guess what?  Same thing.  Seriously people, if you don’t want to experience bizarre, fried, anything-on-a-stick, don’t bother coming to the State Fair!

Philip got Veggie Fries next:  “Fun on the Outside, Healthy on the Inside.”

IMG_1824 IMG_1825

Along with eating delicious cheese curds, we did some actual fair-type-stuff.  I decided that maybe we should check out some of the animals, so we found some cute baby goats and piglets!

IMG_1828 IMG_1830

There was also an amazing ride where you were strapped into a giant hamster ball and bungee’d into the air.  If only it didn’t cost like $25 for a 4-second ride…

Along with the fun of the WAC and State Fair, we had some fun game-playing time at our house.  Biggest hit:  In a Pickle, a game David got for Christmas.  When we played it with his family over Christmas, it seemed really weird, but we re-read the directions and set up more strict guidelines, and it worked a lot better.  Basically the game consists of cards with nouns on them, and you play on top or under the cards based on what it can be “in.”  Such as, the TURKEY is in the SOUP; followed by the SOUP is in my STOMACH.  Dad cheated by having outrageous cards, like LOVE, SOUL, and DANGER.  He won many final rounds by having the KANGAROO be in LOVE and the AIRPLANE be in DANGER.

That concludes my summer.  Stay tuned for a “fall” update (since it’s already snowed, I’m pretty sure we skipped over fall this year and are already in winter).
