22 Jan 2012 Just Say No…

… To Unions.

A guy from SEIU came to the door this evening claiming to be from the hospital. Sarah woke me up from a nap, and I went to see who it was. A soon as I answered he announced where he was from. I cut him of right there and said that I was not interested in joining a union, and closed the door on him mid sentence. I guess he made the rounds today, because he visited a friend of mine after leaving here. She got his card, but basically told him the same thing.

My question is: where did he get my address? It’s not like it’s hidden or anything, but I didn’t give it to him. It’s not public at work. So how did he get it?

Which brings me to what I’m really posting about. The lab is a meritocracy. Without merit, we have nothing. I hear and see how others in unions perform their jobs, doing the bare minimum to get by. And why not? If your job security and wages are not based on what you do, who cares if you don’t go out of your way. Your boss won’t look at you for a promotion, you won’t get any bonuses, so why try harder?

I have made it clear in past posts that I’m Republican. As a Republican, I don’t believe in unions, not that they necessarily go hand in hand. I think they had their place in history and have their place in developing countries, but not in a professional setting.

Would I feel that the union were totally bad if Minnesota were a “right to work” state? Probably not. Unfortunately, since it’s not, if a union were voted into the lab, I would have no choice but to become a member. Unwillingly, of course.

I’m not willing to give up my rights as a solitary employee to become a small part of some communist collective I had no real choice in joining

So I guess what I’m trying to say here is: SEIU — LEAVE ME AND MY WORK ALONE!

Now back to your regularly scheduled pictures of Abby.

03 Jan 2012 eat more chocolate; drink more Dr Pepper & Caribou.

Every year most some years I try to make New Year’s Resolutions, which I then promptly ignore.  Sometimes I make it through January & I think I’ve even made it through about April once, but it’s like resolutions are meant to be broken, you know?  Except for those 2 I mentioned in the title.  I think I’ll do okay with those.

So this year, I’m going to set some goals for the year.  Not the ‘every day I’m going to jog 12 miles’ kind since, let’s face it, I don’t jog at all, much less every day, much less 12 miles.

Then we’ll see how it went at the end of the year.  Maybe.  Unless it went horribly, in which case I will delete this post and no one need ever know…muahahaha!

1. Read more books & Bible stories to Abby, now that she’s a little older & kind of understands words.

2. Update the blog every 2 weeks, minimum.

3. Sew a thing.  Going for a quilt, but completing any one project will satisfy this goal.  Other than a fabric flower, that is, since those take about 5 minutes and I do by hand.  I also saw a really cute tree skirt on a blog I read which I’d like to attempt too.

4. Read all the books I got for my birthday & Christmas this year:

SV Confidential [Pascal]
Longing [Kingsbury]
9/11 series [Kingsbury-reread]
Forever Faithful [Kingsbury-reread]
Hunger Games [Collins-reread]
Marie-Grace & Cecile [American Girl series]
Love & War [Eldridge]
The Male Factor [Feldhahn]
Possession [Gutteridge]

+ catch up on at least 1 series of unread books from my collection.
[basket contains books I’ve started &/or borrowed that I really should try to get through this year too!]

5. Catch up on at least 1 TV series [some options:  Chuck, House, Bones, HIMYM.]

6. Clean & purge, room by room [including closets].

7. Play more Wii Fit + go for walks with Abby this spring/summer/fall.  That is my version of working out.

8. Keep up-to-date with photobooks &/or scrapbooks for Abby.

9. Bake more things [use the fun chocolate, etc. chips I liberated from the chocolate, etc. chip collection at Dave & Karen’s house!]

10. Think of a 10th item for this list.  Play with our camera & learn more about all the fun things it does + learn more about photo-editing.

So.  I guess I’ll be busy.  Good thing I have so much free time with working 40+ hours/week, [attempting to do] housework, & having an almost-one-year-old little girl!

22 Jun 2011 Blog Title “Show You Love”
 |  Category: David, Personal  | Tags: , , ,  | Comments off

I thought it was about time we had a real blog title, instead of just our names. Both Sarah & I really like Jars of Clay, so I tried to come up with a song title that would work. I went through a few, and finally settled upon “Show You Love”. When I asked Sarah what she thought she said “that works.” I guess that’s a yes? Anyone else have a suggestion for what we should/could change it to? The lyrics to this song are:

Speak- say the words that no one else will ever say
Love- love like the world we know is over in a day

I’m gonna show you a love in every language
I’m gonna speak with the words that need no form
I’m gonna give you what you never had before

You’re beautiful and I am weakened by the force of your eyes
So shine bright to separate the truth from the lies
I’m gonna show you love

I’m gonna show you a love in every language
I’m gonna speak with the words that need no form
I’m gonna give you what you never had before

So tie me to a tree and let the smoke and ash collect
No, I won’t regret to let love do what love will let
We can drown in mixed emotions or walk across an angry sea
This is the cost of being free

12 Oct 2008 Church…..Energize
 |  Category: Personal  | Tags: , , , ,  | Comments off

I just don’t feel energized by going to church right now. I’d rather sleep in than go. I don’t know what it is. Sometimes, I feel like I get a great sermon, and I work on what was said. But mostly, I feel like I could gain more energy by sleeping! How awful is that! I’m really looking forward to moving ‘too’ far away from our current church home, just so we can check out some new places. I LOVE the the people at church, but I just don’t get what I need to out of church. I’ve been to my parent’s church and LOVE it. The sermons are just so energizing, and the music is motivational to help the sermon. Anyways, that’s my two cents. I’m sleeping in today. Sarah says she’s going, but I’m going to sleep in.

15 Apr 2008 In other comic news…

And in other comic news, Mallard Fillmore, a great conservative comic, has been removed from the Star Tribune. It was done quietly and was just one day replaced by some comic strip called “Tundra”. Apparently, the strip was the most complained about comic in the paper, according to a post on the KTLK blogs. Unfortunately, the liberal media owner of Star Tribune decided that a FUNNY conservative comic was too much for the paper. Instead, since Garry Trudeau of Doonesbury is on hiatus and not producing daily cartoons, they replaced the daily Doonesbury cartoon with a CONSERVATIVE comic. Unfortunately, this comic is neither funny nor has a point. Oh, and did I mention the other three comics that suddenly appeared in the paper? They were greated with fanfare and a ‘vote for your favorite’. Unfortunately, these comics insult my intellegence! They are neither funny, nor relevant to daily life (see: Cul De Sac)A two year old could come up with better content. What gives? I thought media was supposed to be, relatively, unbiased? Why the liberalism? Can’t more than one viewpoint be heard? I guess I’ll just stop reading the paper, and get my news from the Internet. At least I can pick and choose what I want to hear, instead of paying money for wasted paper and ink. Especially in a year with an election, why not show both points of view, instead of focusing on your own?

Oh, and in case you miss Mallard Fillmore Comics, you can find them here.

01 Apr 2008 Transportaion Tax $$ Reply from the Dems
 |  Category: News, Personal, Political, Rant  | Tags: , , , ,  | Comments off

I wrote an email to the democrat legislators in my district that voted for a gas tax hike and other tax increases that are not really about doing anything. They claim it will help pay for bridge repair and road repair…but I’ll believe that when I see it. Here’s the reply letter I received from Rep. Julie Bunn (D – MN House) regarding that tax increase. It is obviously a form letter, because she praises herself for helping to override the veto by Gov. Pawlenty, and really doesn’t answer anything from my email. Here it is…

28 Mar 2008 Working Nights Ruins My Days and I am not ‘Just Another MLT’
 |  Category: Personal, Rant  | Tags: , , , , , , , ,  | Comments off

Working nights is hard. Third shift. The off shift. Whatever you want to call it. I can stay up all night, but when I get home, whoa buddy, do I want to go to bed. The only problem is, eight hours from 8am is 4pm. So I end up sleeping most of the day away. I guess I feel like I have more ‘time’ available to me, but I feel like my life is eaten up with sleep and work. Not that my paycheck complains about that. There’s not much to do on night shift either. Unless it’s really busy, which it so far hasn’t been, then there’s a lot of down time. But then we complain when it gets to be 4am and the nurse’s decide that a cell count on a patient that is practically a permanent resident of the hospital is a ‘convenient’ time. Not really. When you are without sleep, it’s hard to do. Weird Chemistry tests are hard to accomplish too. It broke the monotony this morning to do two Osmolalities. I guess this leads me into my next two rants: Don’t complain about lack of sleep when you come in at 6:00am and I am NOT ‘just an MLT’.

OK. First, morning shift, stop complaining. You got enough ‘sleep’. If you didn’t, then go to bed earlier. Don’t complain about wanting to call in or not getting enough sleep. FYI — I just stayed up all night doing maintenance and being bored. Then you come in, and complain for your first half hour and do nothing while I run around and do all the work you could be taking over for me. Drink some coffee and get over it!

Next. Don’t say ‘just an MLT’ or ‘another overencompassing MLT’ when I’m around. I am that person. I just don’t yell it out like some people do. Yes, I want to get my MT…I WILL get my MT. I understand that when this is said to me, it probably doesn’t involve me, because I am recognized as NOT just another MLT but a really good tech (even though I just started) and that I really do know what’s going on. No, I haven’t taken my BOR yet. But I know that taking a test from something other than the ASCP or the NCA really doesn’t qualify you to do what I do. And, sorry to say, MLT’s and MT’s at where I work, do pretty much the same thing. Only micro is different than the rest of the lab. Otherwise, I can do everything they can do. I believe my instructor’s story about how he had a ‘just another MLT’ co-worker, and he overcame those obstacles to allow that co-worker to say that he will never say ‘just another MLT’ again. Hopefully I can do that, but when other MLT’s come in and be loud and get what they want, that they do something to mess that up. Not hurt any patients, but that those above them do not look to them when they have problems. Anyone who wants to work nights for a living is crazy.
