Today = Abby is 8 weeks old! Oh my goodness, she’s getting so big.
This is my last week off work; I ‘get’ to go back on Monday. Too bad I can’t just stay home and keep getting paid…that would be fantastic!
Since I have been so amazing at keeping up with blog posts during my time off [ha], I figured I should at least post something before I go back! So here are a few pictures, some stats, and a fun game! Woo!
One month old, and incredible thrilled with Mommy’s photo shoot.
almost 6 weeks old, showing everyone her lunch.
Speaking of Abby getting so big, on Tuesday she has her 2 month appointment. Let’s play a game called
Guess How Big Abby Is!
Here are some clues:
1. She still fits into some of her newborn-size clothes. She is too long for many of her sleep & plays and the Gerber onesies. The next size up is almost all huge on her, like the newborn size was when she was born.
Newborn clothes = 5-8 lbs, up to 21.5 inches
3 month clothes = 8-12.5 lbs, 21.5-24 inches
(based off Carter’s sizing)
2. Her stats to date:
Birth:
Weight: 6 lbs, 4 oz
Length: 20 inches
Head Circumference: 13.5 inches
2.5 weeks:
Weight: 6 lbs, 6 oz
Length: 20.25 inches
Head Circumference: 13.5 inches
5.5 weeks:
(we went in to get her cold checked out, and they just checked weight. The others are estimates done at home)
Weight: 7 lbs, 14 oz
Length: ~22 inches
Head Circumference: ~14 inches

4. Abby a couple days ago, showing off in her 3 month clothes:
So, leave a comment with your guesses on weight, height, &/or head circumference!
And don’t worry, I will post more in the [semi] near future. [Hopefully.]
Until then, you can satisfy your inevitable craving for more pictures of Abby by visiting my facebook album.
This post has been a long time coming. Well, not actually the post, but the projects!
Welcome to Abby’s nursery:
The changing/dressing area: I got the baskets for half-price at Michaels, and we got the hamper on clearance for half-price at Babies R Us! The blanket hanging over the changing table was made by Kari, and the artwork I made is hanging over the dresser.
The sleeping/rocking/eating area: The blanket over the rocking chair was a gift from Tracey, my maid-of-honor. I also got the rest of the decorations up, including the fun elephant and flower wall art from my college roommate, Marie, and a lovely letter ‘a’ salvaged from work (from props on the discard list). Also, please notice the adorable baby in the crib! As you may or may not remember, I made the curtain, mobile canopy, and little accent pillow (on the child-size rocking chair on the other side of the crib) during our painting party back in November.
The closet: Her hanging clothes are organized with alternating pink and white hangers by size. Her newborn and 0-3 month size folded clothes are in the dresser, and the other sizes are sorted into bins (like the stuffed animals on the shelf) next to the wire cubes. The bins were also salvaged from work after the stockroom organization guide changed. The canvas bins contain extra sheets, towels and washcloths, and shoes.
The End.
Like I’ve mentioned, we got to have an ultrasound with David’s cousin’s wife, who teaches ultrasound with David’s mom at Argosy. Heidi wanted to do between 26 and 30 weeks, and we ended up going at 28 weeks exactly!
Baby thought it was weird that something was pushing on her, so she figured she should push back; she was very excited about the whole thing!
Here’s our little baby!
She liked showing us her feet. It looks like she’s flexing her toes here like I can do (that everyone thinks is weird).
Seriously, how do you get your foot by your head like that?!
Cute little baby face; she’s looking more like a little baby rather than an alien baby.
Cute little nose & lips. Her mouth was open when we were looking at her face.
Here’s the back of her. She’s along the right side of me, head down! Her shoulder’s up to the right in the picture, and you can see the edge of her ear above it.
David’s parents came over to help us paint on Saturday.
His mom did the taping (after we quick busted out the Baby’s room so the guys could get started painting in there), while I did arts & crafts.
You can see the paint color along the ceiling and corners.
Bones thought she was getting new toys; tape is delicious.
“What? How can you possibly think I’d steal rolls of tape? I only did it twice…”
Completely safe. I always encourage people to follow ladder safety, at home & at work.
David has skills. He can remove a vent while holding a trim cup!
They got all the green painted: Baby’s room, hallways, and entry.
Kristen & Chad stopped by to see how things were progressing, eat snacks, and play with Bones.
Then Kari came by with her laminating to cut out; she enlisted her mom’s help when the taping & hanging off of ladders was complete.
I had fun with arts & crafts.
Step 1: Make a pattern.
Step 2: Pin it together & see if it works. Puppy sniffing is optional.
Step 3: Pin pieces of curtain panel together.
Step 4: Make loops for top of curtain.
Step 5: Sew curtain panel together.
Step 6: Add cute ribbon to cover seam.
Step 7: Put mobile together & admire its cuteness!
The final product! Light green walls painted by Daddy & Grandpa; cute animal artwork; lamp from Grandma & Grandpa; and mobile decorations, pillow, & curtain made by Mommy!
(The little rocking chair will move elsewhere until she’s big enough to use it, but for now, it’s here!)
Check out my baby album on facebook for more pictures!
In which we [kind of] see me get bigger and see pictures of Baby Helfinstine!
Time to catch up on a couple pictures of my tummy, so we’ll get that over and done with first. This picture was before the State Fair, when I hadn’t gained any weight since approximately week 6. I guess it just redistributed over those 11 or so weeks.
The same day as I was going to do the 20-week picture, we decided to take pictures for our board at work, which is why I am wearing a scarf that covers up the baby to some extent. I was telling one of the other managers about this dilemma while the other one was ringing up a customer. As soon as she was done with that customer, she turned to us and said, “As soon as you started talking about the baby, that girl I just rang started staring at your stomach! She wouldn’t even look at me while I was finishing the transaction!” Apparently babies are distracting, even when covered with a scarf.
This morning I had my 20-week ultrasound. An intern took most of the pictures, and Baby was having fun wiggling all over the place.
Cute baby feet & hands. Right after we got the picture of the hands, Baby punched me! Thanks a lot, kid!
We were also able to get all the fingers & toes in one picture!
Baby arms & legs (well, one leg. The other one looks pretty much the same.) Looks like I’m getting punched again in the second picture here.
And I want to know how there’s room for Baby’s legs to be fully extended in the third picture!
The instructor took these last ones, starting with the leg picture.
As soon as she started looking, Baby cooperated very well & stopped all the crazy wiggling!
And now for the news we’ve all been waiting for (at least those we haven’t already told)…
we’re having a girl!!
I’m excited to be able to actually start getting things ready now!
So yes, I’ve been horrible at posting recently…I guess nothing too terribly exciting has happened.
At the beginning of January, Philip and Susan came down to spend a couple days with Susan’s family before the second semester started. However, I hogged them for much of the time they were here. We spent all day Thursday at the Minnesota Zoo (compliments of the free passes you can check out from the library!)
We got there just in time to see the coral reef show, featuring Diver Doug feeding the fishies. Next, we ran over to the bird show and saw exciting birds swoop over our heads, talk, and other such things. The bald eagle was defending his territory and making loud screeching noises at us and the zoo people the whole time he was on stage.
After the bird show, we spent forever looking at the monkeys. Our favorites were the babies. There was one born in April, one the previous year, and two born in 2005. We went on the [freezing] Minnesota Trail and saw fighting wolverines and some wolves, along with other creatures that can be found in Minnesota, apparently.
Then we warmed up on the Tropics Trail, where Philip reverted back to his childhood (climbing on statues, crawling through caves clearly meant for the toddler-type, etc.). We ended with an exciting trip on the Monorail, where our guide expounded on the benefits of eating acorns…?!?
The next day, David and I went up to Fargo, as planned, to have Christmas with my family. We ended up spending most of Friday afternoon at the nursing home with my grandmother. My aunt had come up from Texas earlier that week, and she found her unresponsive on Friday morning. On Saturday afternoon, Grandma passed away; she was 101 years old and ready to go home to the Lord.
My cousin David and his wife Maria were able to come up for the funeral…from San Diego. I don’t think they knew quite what to think of the cold that is North Dakota in January!
Timothy emailed a history lesson from Iraq involving Grandma’s life, which I read at the funeral. Here are just a few of the things included in it:
When Grandma was born on 22 Dec 1907,
. . . Czar Nikolas II ruled Russia, Kaiser Wilhelm II ruled Germany, Porfirio Diaz was dictator of Mexico, and Theodore Roosevelt was the President of the United States.
. . . there was not yet any such country as the Republic of Ireland; there was such a country as Austria-Hungary; the countries we now know as Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bulgaria, and Albania were all ruled by Turkey; and there were only 46 states in the US.
When the Titanic sunk, Grandma was 4.
When the US entered World War I, Grandma was 9.
Grandma was born 15 years before the establishment of the USSR and lived an additional 18 years after it collapsed.
That is my update from the beginning-middle of January. Since then, we’ve been working lots and occasionally unpacking a random box, and breaking in my new satin copper mixer!
