22 Jan 2012 Just Say No…

… To Unions.

A guy from SEIU came to the door this evening claiming to be from the hospital. Sarah woke me up from a nap, and I went to see who it was. A soon as I answered he announced where he was from. I cut him of right there and said that I was not interested in joining a union, and closed the door on him mid sentence. I guess he made the rounds today, because he visited a friend of mine after leaving here. She got his card, but basically told him the same thing.

My question is: where did he get my address? It’s not like it’s hidden or anything, but I didn’t give it to him. It’s not public at work. So how did he get it?

Which brings me to what I’m really posting about. The lab is a meritocracy. Without merit, we have nothing. I hear and see how others in unions perform their jobs, doing the bare minimum to get by. And why not? If your job security and wages are not based on what you do, who cares if you don’t go out of your way. Your boss won’t look at you for a promotion, you won’t get any bonuses, so why try harder?

I have made it clear in past posts that I’m Republican. As a Republican, I don’t believe in unions, not that they necessarily go hand in hand. I think they had their place in history and have their place in developing countries, but not in a professional setting.

Would I feel that the union were totally bad if Minnesota were a “right to work” state? Probably not. Unfortunately, since it’s not, if a union were voted into the lab, I would have no choice but to become a member. Unwillingly, of course.

I’m not willing to give up my rights as a solitary employee to become a small part of some communist collective I had no real choice in joining

So I guess what I’m trying to say here is: SEIU — LEAVE ME AND MY WORK ALONE!

Now back to your regularly scheduled pictures of Abby.

15 Oct 2008 VOTE FOR AMERICA

McCain/Palin \'08

McCain/Palin '08

<sarcasm> Who am I voting for this election? Obama of course! Why? Because I give in to peer pressure. I hear what everyone is saying, and I agree! Who could be better than Obama? I give you one chance to say one name!!! My coworkers have told me again and again when I try to have a civilized discussion about the election that my ideas and beliefs are completely wrong and I have to go with who would be best for America. I mean, I tried to say that I wasn’t voting for Obama, but it’s just so much easier to say that I am! Roe vs. who? Econo-what? I can’t wait until I have affordable healthcare, while sacrificing my paycheck, so I can’t afford my mortgage and I go broke. I have full faith in the communist….er, democratic party. Vote for Change! </sarcasm>

No really,
VOTE FOR AMERICA!!!

Killer Tomato

This is not “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!” (1978)where the tomatoes kill. This is about a few bad apples (or tomatoes as it were) that are infected with Salmonella. The little buggers cause gastroenteritis. So far, the cases have been localized to Texas and New Mexico, so why then, can I not find a tomato at any restaurant anywhere! Chipotle even says that their tomatoes are not poisoned, but they took theirs away. McDonald’s throughout the US and Canada stopped putting tomatoes on anything, and then today at Potbelly’s the sandwich chick told us that they didn’t have tomatoes “because the FDA recalled them all.” Bull! The FDA did nothing! They put out a warning to be careful and cook tomatoes, but they did not RECALL them. Will tomatoes just ‘show up’ sometime in the next few weeks and be OK again. What’s with all the panic? It’s not E. coli O157:H7. I’d do without tomatoes for that. But salmonella? 100 people could eat 100 equally infected tomatoes and zero of them could get salmonellosis. And oh my goodness, a whole 97 people are sick from them? No deaths probably. Just drink lots of water. You don’t even get antibiotics for salmonella unless its really really bad. Hospitalized, maybe, but they just give you fluids. Just think of all the starving children in Africa. Campbell’s should make lots of tomato soup out of it…salmonella is destroyed after boiling for 5-10 minutes. Sorry, this one was very stream of consciousness. Just give me back my tomatoes.

Here are some pictures of last year’s (2007) memorial day…namely, the wonderful marshmallow/wiener roasting tools that Jennie and Mike received. The pictures speak for themselves.

I guess WCCO axed John Reger and Paul Douglas from their staff a few weeks ago. I didn’t even know it! Both of them are long time anchors in Minnesota. I really enjoy Paul’s weather forecasts, and Reger has been on ‘CCO for forever! Stories can be found on Paul Douglas’ previous home, KARE 11, as well as the Star Tribune.

01 Apr 2008 Transportaion Tax $$ Reply from the Dems
 |  Category: News, Personal, Political, Rant  | Tags: , , , ,  | Comments off

I wrote an email to the democrat legislators in my district that voted for a gas tax hike and other tax increases that are not really about doing anything. They claim it will help pay for bridge repair and road repair…but I’ll believe that when I see it. Here’s the reply letter I received from Rep. Julie Bunn (D – MN House) regarding that tax increase. It is obviously a form letter, because she praises herself for helping to override the veto by Gov. Pawlenty, and really doesn’t answer anything from my email. Here it is…

28 Mar 2008 Working Nights Ruins My Days and I am not ‘Just Another MLT’
 |  Category: Personal, Rant  | Tags: , , , , , , , ,  | Comments off

Working nights is hard. Third shift. The off shift. Whatever you want to call it. I can stay up all night, but when I get home, whoa buddy, do I want to go to bed. The only problem is, eight hours from 8am is 4pm. So I end up sleeping most of the day away. I guess I feel like I have more ‘time’ available to me, but I feel like my life is eaten up with sleep and work. Not that my paycheck complains about that. There’s not much to do on night shift either. Unless it’s really busy, which it so far hasn’t been, then there’s a lot of down time. But then we complain when it gets to be 4am and the nurse’s decide that a cell count on a patient that is practically a permanent resident of the hospital is a ‘convenient’ time. Not really. When you are without sleep, it’s hard to do. Weird Chemistry tests are hard to accomplish too. It broke the monotony this morning to do two Osmolalities. I guess this leads me into my next two rants: Don’t complain about lack of sleep when you come in at 6:00am and I am NOT ‘just an MLT’.

OK. First, morning shift, stop complaining. You got enough ‘sleep’. If you didn’t, then go to bed earlier. Don’t complain about wanting to call in or not getting enough sleep. FYI — I just stayed up all night doing maintenance and being bored. Then you come in, and complain for your first half hour and do nothing while I run around and do all the work you could be taking over for me. Drink some coffee and get over it!

Next. Don’t say ‘just an MLT’ or ‘another overencompassing MLT’ when I’m around. I am that person. I just don’t yell it out like some people do. Yes, I want to get my MT…I WILL get my MT. I understand that when this is said to me, it probably doesn’t involve me, because I am recognized as NOT just another MLT but a really good tech (even though I just started) and that I really do know what’s going on. No, I haven’t taken my BOR yet. But I know that taking a test from something other than the ASCP or the NCA really doesn’t qualify you to do what I do. And, sorry to say, MLT’s and MT’s at where I work, do pretty much the same thing. Only micro is different than the rest of the lab. Otherwise, I can do everything they can do. I believe my instructor’s story about how he had a ‘just another MLT’ co-worker, and he overcame those obstacles to allow that co-worker to say that he will never say ‘just another MLT’ again. Hopefully I can do that, but when other MLT’s come in and be loud and get what they want, that they do something to mess that up. Not hurt any patients, but that those above them do not look to them when they have problems. Anyone who wants to work nights for a living is crazy.
