17 Jan 2012 happy birthday [party], abby!
 |  Category: Abby  | Tags: , , , , ,  | Comments off

Due to our work schedules, we had Abby’s birthday party on Saturday.  My family came down for the weekend [as opposed to that weekend last year, when we went to Fargo for the baby shower].  On Friday night, my parents, David, Abby, & I went to Famous Dave’s, where Abby attempted to eat as much of my meal as possible.  Apparently she also enjoys Georgia Chopped Pork & Drunkin’ Apples.

I made 10 dozen mini cupcakes that night & frosted them in the morning [along with decorating] while Abby napped.  NOM.

Abby was not terribly thrilled that I woke her up for [horrors!] a bath before her party, but she quickly cheered up when she realized that everyone was still there to play with her.

After delicious tacos (courtesy of David), Abby got to open her presents!  She was very excited about all of them, especially the cards…who knew that cards were so fascinating & delicious?!

DSC_4628.NEF

Then it was cake time!  I had 3 full sized cupcakes, so Abby got one of those.  She was not too sure what to do with it; she knew it was food, but she wasn’t sure where to begin until I broke it in half for her.

DSC_4727.NEF

Then she shoved half of it into her mouth and INHALED the cupcake.  NOM.  She got a little messy, but probably about 90% of it ended up in her mouth.  Plus I think that’s kind of the point of a 1 year birthday party!

Saturday evening, after church with David’s family, Abby got her first restaurant meal for herself—grilled cheese at Panera!  She ate half of the sandwich [we saved the rest for dinner the next day] & all of the yogurt.  How she is still in the 2nd percentile, I have no clue.  Girl can EAT.

Thanks to all who came to Abby’s party &/or sent gifts…she loves all her new toys & clothes & books & she’s excited to actually turn 1 on Friday!

Christmas [for Abby] started on December 23, when she & Bones got to go play at Grandma & Grandpa’s house since David & I both had to work.

That evening, we went down for the weekend, which started out with the Christmas Eve service [with live animals]!

On Christmas Eve Day, Abby had fun playing with [Uncle Chad’s] presents under the tree

& the ornaments & gumdrop garland.

DSC_4353.NEF

After a yummy dinner, Abby got to open a present [since David worked that weekend & we wouldn’t be able to celebrate for real until Christmas afternoon!].  She got a singing cookie jar [shape sorter]!

DSC_4399.NEF

On Christmas Day, Abby got to open her stocking.  That morning, she was with Aunt Kristen & saw the dolphin sticking out of her stocking & took it.

Oh my goodness, it’s CANDY!

DSC_4426.NEF

When David got back from work, we ate candy cane pie [& Abby got a bath & wardrobe change].  Then it was present time!

Abby got covered in bows

& because she had boycotted naptime that afternoon, fell asleep after only a few presents!

DSC_4489.NEF

When she woke up, all of her toys were ready to be played with.  So exciting!  [& loud as they all sing.]

On New Year’s Eve, my parents, brothers, & Melissa came down to celebrate Christmas.  Abby helped open her presents this time.

DSC_4215.NEF

Abby turned 11 months a week ago.  I have discovered that as she gets more & more mobile, it gets a whole lot harder to do her photo shoots!  Hence, Christmas bows!  She loved playing with them both for pictures & when she saw them on presents under the tree.

DSC_4237.NEF

Abby is very interested in looking at what’s going on around her.  She’s not too interested in standing or pulling herself up (except into my lap), but she now alternates between army crawling & crawling on her hands and knees.

DSC_4242.NEF

Abby still loves food (as evidenced at Thanksgiving).  She loves all baby food fruits & orange veggies (but not carrots), but she’s not so sure about the meal ones; they’re okay for about four bites, & then she’s over it.  David discovered that they’re really bland, & maybe that’s what she didn’t like, so we were horrible parents & added a sprinkle of salt to her lasagna one night, & she gobbled it up!  We are also horrible parents & let her have cake & ice cream at my birthday earlier this month…& gingerbread cookies & spritz & candy cane pie at Christmas.  Even though she still has no teeth, she eats just about all of the regular breakfast & lunch food at school, along with crackers (saltines, cheez-its, graham, club, & goldfish), Cheerios & other cereal, & just about anything else you put in front of her.  We’re working on a sippy cup transition still; she likes to wave it around and suck on it, but she doesn’t really drink from it.  Maybe we’ll have to try another kind?

DSC_4254.NEF

Abby is still a fantastic sleeper.  She goes to bed between 6:30 & 7 usually, & I get her up at 7 for school most mornings.  Otherwise, she’ll sleep until 7:30-8:30.  At school, she typically takes a couple 40-60 minute naps.  On weekends, she’ll be awake for about 1 1/2 hours in the morning, nap for 2-2 1/2 hours, be awake for lunch & playing (about another 1 1/2-2 hours), then take another 2 hour nap.  School is exhausting, so we need lots of rest on the weekends!  Either that, or Mommy & Daddy are really boring compared to all her friends at school.

DSC_4271.NEF

For Abby’s actual 11 month birthday, I got a call from school telling me that she had a temp of 102 when she woke up from her nap, so I needed to come get her ASAP.  We were able to get her in to the doctor (an actual diagnosis of something not contagious would allow her to go back earlier than the 24 hours they want sick kiddos to stay home).  We got to find out her current weight…at 11 months exactly (probably even to the hour!), Abby weighed in at a whopping…

16 lbs., 6.8 oz.!

which puts her at the 2.6 percentile.  So even though she eats everything in sight, Baby still has the highest metabolism ever.  Or something.  Since her growth is staying along the same curve on the charts, our doctor’s fine with it.  (Especially since she eats well & still has chubby cheeks + one roll on each thigh!)

DSC_4275.NEF

The doctor’s diagnosis for poor sick little Abby was a double ear infection!  So sad.  :(   We got her prescription + a doctor’s note for baby acetaminophen & ibuprofen dosing for school, & she started feeling better right away.  David took the next day off work & stayed home with her anyway, just to give her some sleep & recovery time.  She adores her medicine.  It’s pink & fruity & sweet & she gets so excited when she sees it; she bounces up & down & grins!

DSC_4290.NEF

The weekend before Christmas, we went to a Christmas concert at church with the whole Helfinstine family…here we are afterwards, before we ate dinner!

Moral of the story:  I suppose now I have to plan her birthday party for real.  With all the free time I have.

Stay tuned for:  Abby’s 1st Christmas!

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Luke 2:11-14 (KJV)

What a year 2011 has been!  We started out the year with a bang (or a burst…??!) with Abigail Grace Helfinstine making an early appearance on January 20.  Arriving two and a half weeks earlier than anticipated, I was very glad she hadn’t come a few days earlier, when we were stuck at the Monticello McDonalds after my car decided to die on the way back from a weekend in Fargo.

DSC_1090

After spending two months at home (can I just say, I love maternity leave?  When else can you get paid to sit on the couch, eat M&Ms, watch Criminal Minds marathons, and snuggle with a brand new bay), I went back to work at Aerie, where I put in my two-week notice.

Oh yeah, on maternity leave, I also applied for, went through the interview process, and was hired at Wells Fargo.

While David and I are at work, Abby goes to school at a nearby daycare.  The teachers there love her, and she has a lot of fun watching the bigger kids, eating lots of food, and playing with her friends.

Bones, our now two-year-old Lab-Welsh Corgi, is doing very well adapting to life with Baby.  She (Bones) is glad at she doesn’t have to sleep in a cage like the baby, and has recently discovered that she is apt to receive snacks if she sits by the highchair.  Abby loves to pet Bones, along with crawling after her, giggling and screaming.  Bones is not quite as fond of this, but does enjoy giving Abby kisses.  Ew.

DSC_3502.NEF

While I have made an exciting {?} career change, David continues to work at Children’s Hospital.  He is no longer attending Argosy and is entertaining the idea of minimizing his phlebotomizing.  Interpret that as you wish.

We spent a week this summer with my family {the extended Bjerkaas clan} at the resort near Fergus Falls, where Abby got to meet lots of second cousins.  There were six children who were age two and younger there!  This summer, we also got to see Timothy, who has completed his time in the Army, for the first time in three years.  We have been attending church with David’s parents and sister Kari down in Lakeville, which we have really been enjoying.  This past weekend, we went to the Christmas Concert there, featuring the Minnesota Orchestra.  Abby absolutely loved it; she was so excited and bounced and waved to everyone.  Until she got tired and fell asleep, that is.

We hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas and a blessed New Year…
stay tuned for Abby’s 11 month update!

Last weeks was Abby’s 10 month birthday…which means only 2 months until her first birthday.  Yikes!

{this post will be mostly pictures since there’s not a whole lot different to update…Abby still likes to eat, sleep, & play!}

Abby is becoming very mobile.  She loves to army crawl from the living room to the kitchen, giggling the whole time.  She will also chase Bones around, trying to pet her.  Bones is not the biggest fan of this game; she likes it when there is food involved & has discovered that being near Abby’s high chair is a good spot to get treats like Cheerios.

{sneak peek of Christmas!}

Abby was pretty sure Thanksgiving was the best day ever—she got to eat so much food!  She ate some of everything, including a full slice of pumpkin pie!

27 Oct 2011 abby::nine months

Can you believe it?  Little Miss Abby is 9 months old!

DSC_3685.NEF

Abby had her nine-month appointment today, complete with flu shot (for me too!) and blood draw.  She didn’t cry at all with her finger poke; she got a little upset that it took so long to get enough blood and yelled a bit towards the end.  She didn’t even mind her flu shot!  Afterwards, she looked at me like, “Wait, I think I’m supposed to cry about this.  Mommy!!”  And then she was over it.  The doctor pronounced her ‘perfect’ and said she’s ‘doing fabulously.’  Yay Abby!  She continues to be my tiny little girl—the nurse commented that she’s had 2-month old boys weighing more than Abby weighs now!

DSC_3689.NEF

Nine-Month Stats

Length:  26.5 inches
{15.5 percentile::in line with last check-up}

Weight:  15 lbs., 6 oz.
{3.4 percentile::yay—only 96.6 percent of babies are bigger than Abby now!!}

Head Circumference:  17.25 inches
{42.9 percentile::getting bigger!}

Weight-for-Height:  14.3 percentile::the doctor was very impressed by her growth here.

DSC_3690.NEF

Developmentally, Abby is doing exactly what she should be doing.  She learned how to wave last week; she spent a whole day at school waving to everyone!  She crawls by scooting and flinging herself forward.  She can get up on her hands and knees, but isn’t quite sure what she should do from there (hence, flinging herself forward!).  She likes to talk and laugh and is very curious about everything that is going on around her.  Her favorite things to do are eat her toys, especially her picnic food; eat actual food; and play with Bones.  She also likes to watch the big kids at school—she likes being in the walker there so she can chase after them…and they can give her rides!

DSC_3693.NEF

Abby loves food.  She really enjoys feeding herself puffs, yogurt melts, crunchies, and any other finger foods I give her.  She doesn’t have any teeth yet, which limits what I can actually give her in terms of table food.  Last week we got a copy of the school lunch menu and got to select what fruits/veggies Abby can eat from it!  She does not like baby food vegetables other than sweet potatoes and squash anymore, but she likes to eat ‘real’ vegetables.  She wants to eat everything she can get her little hands on, and can eat her weight in food!  She can still eat a container of fruit or fruit/oatmeal in 2 minutes or less.  When she feeds herself, she spends more time eating because it’s so fun!

DSC_3695.NEF

This week I started putting some 6-9 month clothes on Abby.  They are still big on her, but she doesn’t swim in them.  Since it’s getting cooler and her 9 month clothes are more fall/wintery, I figured I’d give it a shot.  She looks so grown up in her fall clothes!  So for the next few weeks, Abby has twice the wardrobe.  I can still layer her 6 month clothes with long-sleeve onesies and leggings for a while, like I did with her 3 month clothes in the spring.

DSC_3699.NEF

Abby is a fantastic sleeper:  she goes to bed about 7pm each night and will sleep about 12 hours if given the opportunity.  Earlier this week she let me sleep in until 9:30!  When I went to her room, she was awake, just playing in her crib, completely happy.  She is not terribly impressed with me on mornings I get her up at 6:30; she would rather just be given her pacifier and go back to sleep.  I’ve been putting her to bed without it recently and just giving it to her if she wakes up early.  After our ‘fun’ summer excursions to Fargo and Farmington where she did not appreciate sleeping not at home, we have discovered that she does not like sleeping in the same room as Mommy & Daddy.  If we put her in a separate room when we’re not at home, she goes to bed just fine and sleeps as usual.  {Of course, her wonderful sleeping habits make me nervous that future babies will be horrible sleepers…ack!}
