17 Nov 2009 Fall Update (by David)

It’s fall, technically. October felt like winter, but November has turned out to be pretty warm…actually fall-like. As you may have noticed, I’ve merged my old blog with this one. All posts have been updated and left here for your pleasure. It’s been busy the last few weeks.

I’m back in school at Argosy to get the final 2 years of my second 4 year degree in Medical Technology (MT). I am now the Chemistry Lead at work and report to the Chemistry Tech Specialist at work. I am learning her job so that I could potentially take over for her someday. I am ready for a break.

Sarah has moved stores and is now at Mall of America. She is still with aerie. It’s about 2.5 times the drive she had before, but she said that she likes how busy it is at the store there versus Rosedale, although she misses the people she worked with at Rosedale.

We’re hosting Thanksgiving here this year. It should be interesting…we’ve never hosted a major holiday before. We will have lived here for a year tomorrow! Tha’ts all for now! I put up Christmas lights outside today…will post pictures once we have more decorating done.

Time to sign away our lives entirely!
A week and a half ago we signed a purchase agreement for a townhouse near Kristen & Chad…3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, 3 stories with a family room! It’s in an association with a community center with a fitness center, party room, & pool, along with biking/walking trails. Also, with association fees and the mortgage, it’s completely affordable–not much more than we’re currently paying to rent our lovely 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath townhome with zero amenities!
Today we got two novels in the mail, as I like to call them. Two copies of all the mortgage papers where we sign away our lives. I wonder how many trees are used to create all these forms that we sign & then just file away somewhere…
So yay! Exciting. We have to turn in notice here by the end of the month, then closing is mid/late November, provided everything goes according to plan.

In other exciting news, we opened our new aerie store last Tuesday. Our store is lovely and beautiful, although it’s so much slower than AE! I’m the hiring manager, so it was incredibly chaotic the first week of September when I was trying to get us a full staff, along with looking for houses. Then, the weekend we were getting ready to open the store, we signed the purchase agreement! Our NSO (new store opener–corporate sends each new store someone to help them open–a manager from another store who has been trained to help, or at the very least, given a list of email addresses and phone numbers of people to contact when something inevitably goes wrong!) figured my stress level must be at about 27 on a 1-10 scale. Oh well, how different is buying a house & opening a store be from taking finals, grading finals, moving, & getting married in a one-week time frame??

04 May 2008 3 month update

Well, it’s been almost 3 months since I’ve posted anything, so I’ll try to get caught up & do a better job in the future! Now that I’m no longer working 40+ hours a week for free along with 25 hours a week paid, I have a little more time on my hands!

I’ll start with where I left off…end of January. After finishing up grading tests & end of quarter stuff, I was done with student teaching. That evening was David’s cousin Jake’s wedding.

That weekend, my parents came down for a friend’s wedding. Philip came with & demonstrated his Guitar Hero skills…apparently he played all summer & can beat the game on expert or something. I don’t really know–I guess David & his cousin Caleb were both really impressed. After church & lunch on Sunday, we decided to kill time by looking at town homes & found great ones in Farmington (just up the street from David’s parents). However, it turns out that school loans from Northwestern, UMN, Argosy, and UWRF do not equal a good enough debt-to-income ratio for us to get a mortgage.

So that ends January. On to February…

Valentine’s day…we went to sushi, which apparently takes reservations for V-day. We were not expecting that (since it’s never busy). They found us a table practically in the kitchen…and proceeded to forget about us all night. Not so great.

My flower girl turned 6 at the end of February. She was super-excited to be turning 6 on February 28, while Michael (from church in Fargo)wasn’t turning “6″ until February 29! She thought it was really funny that they could both be turning 6, but he was so much bigger than her…nobody told her that he was actually turning 24, but since he was born on Leap Day, he had only had 6 actually birthdays.

March didn’t start off too pleasantly. David’s grandma died at the beginning of the month, so instead of going to jury duty on March 10, I went to the funeral. It was different experiencing it as someone else’s grandparent & not my own.

The end of March brought Easter & Kristen’s birthday! Since her birthday was the day after Easter, we celebrated them together after church with brunch, decorating eggs, watching Enchanted, & cake!

In April I finally got my teaching licenses! Stupid paperwork. I am now officially licensed to teach grades 1-6 in Minnesota & 1-8 in Wisconsin. However, since it’s so close to the end of the school year & kids are so crazy at this time of year, I’m keeping on working at AE & I’ll apply for jobs as they start posting through the summer. Since the last floorset at work, I’ve been “acting stock supervisor” as one of my coworkers put it. I’m in charge of the back room until the next floorset, & I spent my first week back there hanging, sizing, & sorting out all the clearance & basically straightening it all up since our district manager & new regional manager were coming for a big visit. That week I also went up to St. Cloud with 2 of my managers to help finish setting up the new Aerie opening in their mall. We dressed all their bustforms (they’re not mannequins…they don’t have heads or limbs) & set their windows. We’re going to be opening our Aerie in September, so our DM wanted us to see what to expect or something.

David’s been working random shifts (it seems like). He had a 4 or so week run of night shifts…10pm to 7am! Last week he worked evenings, his “normal” shift. Next he’ll be going to days to finish up his remaining training. Maybe someday we’ll see each other again…

Well, that’s about all I can think of, & I’m sure you’re sick of reading this (if anyone’s even reading it anyway!).

This weekend is yet another floorset at AE. We just did fall 2 3 weeks (I think?) ago, and now it’s time for holiday 1. At least in this floorset we get actual new clothes in the store, not just mass rearrangement. Next week I get to go to an aerie meeting with one of our managers and learn about this season’s underwear, I guess. This manager came from Victoria’s Secret, so she’s our aerie manager now (also since the original one is going on maternity leave at any minute!). It’s kind of weird at our store since we carry a very limited amount of aerie, so we’re supposed to get people to order it from online through the “look book.” However, most people are more interested in what the closest store that actually carries it is!
I’m almost half done with my field experiencing. The teacher from the 2nd school was supposed to contact me, but she hasn’t yet, so I’m going to do over 25 hours at my first placement while I try to get ahold of her! (I like these 6th graders. The second placement is with 3rd grade, which I don’t want to teach anyway!)
