On January 19, 2011, after [what turned out to be] my last night of semi-uninterrupted sleep, I went to my 37 week appointment.  Everything looked good & normal.  No dilation or anything.  Since I hit the 37 week mark, I got the ‘all clear’ as far as having the baby & set my next appointment for the following week.

I had a whole list of what I needed to get accomplished that day:  the usual cleaning & laundry, along with de-Christmas-ing the house & getting some baby stuff done.  I was already out, so I grabbed a bagel & an amaretto Italian soda from Dunn Bros. & armed with my list of what sizes I needed to stock up on, made my way to Babies R Us to hit up the baby clothing clearance sale.  I found some cute 3 & 9 month outfits to get us a start on those sizes & got an extra 40% off [w00t!] & then headed to Target to update the registry, post-showers, since we would be getting an extra 10-or-whatever-% off everything left on the list.  After a disastrous attempt to update it [for some reason, my password that worked perfectly fine online did not work in the store.  Fantastic.], the girl at the guest services desk talked to the helpful people on the phone & got it reset so it worked in the store.  [FYI, she still remembers me when I go in…that’s how much of a fiasco that whole event was.]  I finally got the registry updated & some grocery shopping done, then went home to tackle some laundry.  I wanted to add some more online-only things to the Target registry too, &, lo & behold, neither my new nor my old password worked.  Super fantastic.  So I got to spend another half hour on the phone arguing with target.com about my password.  At least I could still get clothes washed at the same time…??!?

While the laundry was wrapping up, I started some more baby stuff:  sorting her new clothes, blankets, & towels to be washed; sorting & organizing the rest of her gifts; & sorting cards & gift receipts & finding the duplicate gifts [impressively, only 2 or 3 items!].

I was making decent progress around 6pm, with laundry running & a good chunk of baby stuff taken care of, when…um, what was that?!

Aaaand, my water broke.

Weirdest.thing.ever.

After I determined that this was indeed what had happened, I came downstairs and told David, “Um, I think my water just broke.” We called Maternity Care and they told us to come in right away—they thought they’d be able to find a room for us. How reassuring. We packed our bags kind of in a daze, while David referred back to my book on what to bring to the hospital.

from Welcome, Abigail Grace, in which you can relive the rest of our exciting experience!

**Spoiler Alert::we had a baby.**

One year ago today, I was just wrapping up [what turned out to be] my last shift at Aerie, pre-Abby.  I was really excited because I only had 13 shifts left until I would be officially on maternity leave—since I was due on February 5, I had decided that my last day would be Thursday, February 3, so I could put in a full week & have Friday & Saturday off.

Tuesday, January 18, was the first [& only] time I wore a maternity top other than a t-shirt that looked absolutely no different from any other t-shirts I own.  I was doing some mapping for the weekly update & holding the packet of papers in front of my stomach.  I set them down to help a customer, & she was like, ‘oh my goodness, you’re pregnant!  I didn’t even notice!’ & was super-surprised to find out I was due in 2.5 weeks.  The girls I worked with tried to figure out what they would do if I went into labor at work, which I assured them I wouldn’t…after all, I was going to be done working a couple days before my due date and everyone* knows you don’t go early with your first baby.  They also started making a list of guesses of when I’d have the baby, the earliest being February 10.  I left work excited for my day off the next day, when I would have my 37 week appointment & GET ALL THE THINGS DONE, like thank-you notes from my showers, cleaning & laundry, & baby prep:  baby laundry, organize other baby things, more baby shopping, etc.

*  Dear Everyone,
Apparently you only know MckMama & my mom, who had their first babies 2.5 weeks late, because c
learly you do not know, um, pretty much ANY of the people I know.  Who [almost] all had their first babies early.  And not just like a day.  More like a week or two or more.  Try again.
Love, Sarah.
P.S.  Just kidding.
P.P.S.  But seriously, I do know a ton of people who had their first babies early.

One year ago today,

I got a call from my ‘special doctor’ (well, one of the people in the office).

It was a short call, but it changed our lives.

It consisted of,

“Congratulations!”

“What??”

“Your blood work came back positive.  You’re pregnant!”

“What?  Really?!”

And that was about it.  I was 3 weeks, 5 days pregnant at the time.

One year later,

our sweet baby Abby is 4 months old.

She was born 34 weeks + 4 hours after that phone call.

This post has been a long time coming.  Well, not actually the post, but the projects!

Welcome to Abby’s nursery:

The changing/dressing area:  I got the baskets for half-price at Michaels, and we got the hamper on clearance for half-price at Babies R Us!  The blanket hanging over the changing table was made by Kari, and the artwork I made is hanging over the dresser.

The sleeping/rocking/eating area:  The blanket over the rocking chair was a gift from Tracey, my maid-of-honor.  I also got the rest of the decorations up, including the fun elephant and flower wall art from my college roommate, Marie, and a lovely letter ‘a’ salvaged from work (from props on the discard list).  Also, please notice the adorable baby in the crib!  As you may or may not remember, I made the curtain, mobile canopy, and little accent pillow (on the child-size rocking chair on the other side of the crib) during our painting party back in November.

DSC_1309

The closet:  Her hanging clothes are organized with alternating pink and white hangers by size.  Her newborn and 0-3 month size folded clothes are in the dresser, and the other sizes are sorted into bins (like the stuffed animals on the shelf) next to the wire cubes.  The bins were also salvaged from work after the stockroom organization guide changed.  The canvas bins contain extra sheets, towels and washcloths, and shoes.

The End.

Sarah’s to-do list
Wednesday, January 19, 2011
as of 6 pm

1.  37 week doctor’s appointment

I made up my lost weight from the previous week and came in at +25 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight!  Baby is still sounding and measuring perfect; she’s in position, ready to go, but I haven’t started dilating at all.  Next appointment:  Wednesday, January 28 (38 weeks, 4 days).

2.  Babies R Us

Found a bunch of cute clothes on clearance (with an extra 40% off too!) to fill in some missing sizes from what we have at home.

3.  Target

Updated the registry since Target does baby clearance after Christmas and all the clothes and some other items were no longer available.  They have super cute new clothes for spring, just fyi!  Bought groceries, etc., since David’s trip to Festival only included a couple lunch items for me.

4.  Clean bathrooms

5.  Laundry

In progress.  All the laundry is sorted; the whites are done, and the last two loads are in the machines.

6.  Put away baby shower gifts

In progress.  I have everything sorted and am trying to decide what to put where.

7.  Wash more baby things

All tags are off and items are sorted by color, ready to go down to the laundry when our stuff is done.

8.  Put away Christmas decorations

9.  Dust

10.  Pack hospital bag

11.  Write thank-you notes from showers

12.  Put gas in car (Thursday morning)

I always have an excess of things to do on my days off, especially since my days off the previous week were spent in Fargo, but I figured I’d finish up the rest on Monday since I had that day off too.

We packed our bags kind of in a daze, while David referred back to my book on what to bring to the hospital (see the not-crossed-off #10 on my to-do’s), called our parents, and headed out.  Oh yeah, see also #12; so we had to stop for gas on the way.  When we were about halfway to the hospital, I started having contractions about 3 minutes apart.

We got to the hospital about 7pm and went to Maternity, although they seemed to have no idea why I was there; apparently, even though my doctor has all the paperwork faxed after the 36 week appointment, the hospital hadn’t gotten my file together yet?!  We ended up getting one of the last two available rooms!  The nurse leading us to our room said, “Wow, you look way too calm to be in labor!”  Riiight.  Although, as I’ve said when people asked if I was ready for labor, she’ll come out whether or not I’m ready!  We got all set up in the room and I got my lovely external monitors on to listen to her heartbeat and measure my contractions.  It was entertaining watching the numbers on the contraction monitor.  The nurse said they only kind of meant something—it might register at 200, but if you’re still laughing & joking around, clearly it’s not that bad.  On the other hand, it could only show a 50, but she said she could tell by looking if it was a bad one or not.  We thought it was fun that when it went over 100, it would flash a + in front of the number.  Bonus points!!  (I suppose that means they weren’t actually that bad.)  They were still coming about 3-4 minutes apart, and I was at 3 cm.  They had called my doctor, who was completely surprised to hear that I was in labor, especially since I’d just seen her 8 hours earlier!  And I wasn’t due for another 2 1/2 weeks!  The nurse told me that if the baby decided to come during the night, another doctor would be delivering since my doctor was home with her little kids and her husband was out of town.

DSC_1076

Since nothing too exciting seemed to be happening, David went out to find us some snacks.  [He had just been about to see if I wanted dinner yet when I came downstairs to tell him that we needed to call the hospital.]  It was determined that most likely, nothing would happen before midnight, but they’d start me on Pitocin in the morning.  [When your water breaks, typically they want to get the baby out quickly due to an increased risk of infection.]  David’s parents and sister stopped by that evening, and my mom and brother ended up getting into town about 12:30 am.  The nurse told us to try to get some sleep, but as soon as I’d start to fall asleep, I’d have another contraction, so she gave me a couple options:  pills or a shot.  Um, I’ll take the pills, thanks.

After a few hours of sleep (they were planning on starting the IV around 6 am), the nurse came in and told me I could take a shower & order some breakfast, and after that I’d get all hooked up with drugs.  I’m pretty sure the room service people thought I was crazy when I ordered French toast, a ham & cheese omelet, juice, fruit, and a donut…just for myself.  My mom and brother came to the hospital around the time our breakfast came; Philip was going to need to leave by noon to get back to Fargo.  David’s parents came at some point as well.  The rest of the morning was pretty exciting…I got a new nurse, contractions kind of mellowed out, and I got my IV put in.  On the fourth try.  Pretty sure I thought I’d throw up at one point there [needles are not my friend].  My nurse tried once in each hand, then she called in another nurse who tried once in my right arm, and then they called the swat team, who finally got it in.  They got the Pitocin going to speed up the contraction process, then told me to get some lunch before I got my epidural.  They try to do that between 5 and 7 cm, and I was at 5.  The nurse turned up the Pitocin, and David ordered my lunch for me, then everyone went to get lunch.  My lunch came right around the time when the drugs started doing their thing (around 12:30) and my contractions started getting really painful.  I could make it through maybe one bite between contractions.  It was great.

DSC_1077

The nurse called the anesthetist to get my epidural going, although the guy she called was apparently at a different hospital that day, so he had to call the one who was at the hospital I was at.  It all ended up taking a very long, painful time, and during the time I was getting the epidural, I had three incredibly painful contractions and thought I was going to DIE.  After that was all done, it was all good and I was incredibly tired.  I had dilated to 9 cm at this point (about 2pm), so they told me to get a little bit of rest before the doctor got there.

I got another new nurse at 3 [who, by the way, was fantastic], and about 3:45 they told me to start pushing.  I was still really tired, so between contractions, I actually took mini-naps.  That’s okay, right?!  Two hours later, at 5:36 pm, on January 20, our little baby girl made her appearance!  I got to see her for a little bit after she was flung onto my stomach, but then she was whisked away since I needed some [read:  1 hour’s worth] stitches and obviously that should be done before I regain feeling in the lower half of my body!  [She decided to be super-Baby and stuck her arm up by her head on the way out.] The doctors (a resident was there too) and nurse asked if got to hear her name yet, so I asked David to see her and find out what her name was.

Our baby Abby measured at 20 inches long, 6 lbs 4 oz, with lots of hair!  She got to meet three of her grandparents and her Auntie Kristen when she was two hours old.  She was not impressed at the prospect of her first bath, but we made it through!  [And I look super pale.  Fantastic.]

22 Jan 2011 pregnancy highlights: 37/38 weeks.
 |  Category: Pregnancy  | Tags: ,  | 6 Comments

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I’m combining weeks 37 & 38 in one post.  At least it’s on time for week 38!

37 weeks

Pregnancy Highlights: January 22, 2011.

How Far Along: If Baby were still inside, today I would be 38 weeks.

Size of Baby:  Last week, Baby was Swiss chard:  6 1/3 lbs, 19+ inches.  I think after hearing that, she decided enough’s enough; I don’t want to be any more goofy vegetables!  So she decided to break out before she got to turn into a leek: just under 7 lbs., 19.5+ inches.

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  I lost 1 pound at my 36.5 week appointment, but managed to eat enough cupcakes and cookies to gain 2 pounds for my appointment on Wednesday morning (January 19).  The girls at work told me on Monday that my stomach looks fake.  They thought I probably just shoved a basketball under my shirt…yes, a kicking, wiggling basketball.  I wonder where they sell those?!

Maternity Clothes:  Still the same; I wear my maternity jeans and one pair of regular jeans that’s a size up from normal (I can still zip & button them just fine!), but as soon as I get home, I change into my rollovers (yoga pants) or pj pants.  I also wore, for the first time, one of my 2 non-t-shirt maternity shirts, on Tuesday.

Gender:  Baby Girl!

Movement:  She was finally getting a little cramped in there, just wiggling and kicking, but no more crazy flips.

Sleep:  Still not incredibly comfortable.  Once I was able to fall asleep, it was great, until I had to wake up for the bathroom!

Symptoms:  No change.

What I Miss:  Being comfortable.  Eating sushi.

Cravings:  None, unless you count sushi.  I really wanted that this past week; David & I talked on Tuesday night about how we only had 2 1/2 weeks left until we (and by we, I mean I) could eat sushi!

Best Moment of the Week:  officially full-term as of January 15!  We went up to Fargo that weekend for a baby shower and to celebrate Christmas with my family.  Sadly, my car decided to DIE on the way home, stranding us in Monticello until David’s parents were came to rescue us!

Of course, then there’s the obvious:  Baby coming!  That will be another post (with plenty of pictures, but no creepy nasty delivery-type ones because that was not allowed!), for another day, when I have had more than 2 1/2 hours of sleep.

What I’m Looking Forward To:  Well, if Baby hadn’t decided to make an appearance 2 1/2 weeks early, we were looking forward to putting the last touches on her nursery and doing all that nesting fun.  So many things were on the list for this weekend…so much for that!  Instead, we are looking forward to getting to know our new baby girl!

38 weeks

Welcome Baby Abby!

09 Jan 2011 pregnancy highlights: 36 weeks.

36 weeks-2

Pregnancy Highlights: January 8, 2011.

How Far Along: 36 weeks.

Size of Baby:  She is a crenshaw melon this week…because I know what that is.  She’s about 6 lbs now, gaining an ounce a day.  She should be about 18.5 inches long, too.  I guess now we’re to the point where if I were to go into labor, the doctor’s okay with it.  (So far, though, she’s not interested in coming out yet.  Which is good since we still need more baby things!)

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  According to the doctor, I gained 3 lbs. since my last appointment (2 weeks ago).  So +24 lbs total, I think.

Maternity Clothes:  I pretty much stick with my one pair of maternity jeans now just because they don’t have a button to annoy me.  But I don’t like the panel so I shove it down like rollovers and use my bella band to hold them up.  I’m cool like that.

Gender:  Baby Girl!

Movement:  Maybe she decided she’s actually running out of room??  She still wiggles and kicks, but she hasn’t been as crazy since we went to the doctor on Tuesday.  I think the doctor almost didn’t believe how active she really still was until she felt her bounce all over the place!

Sleep:  There was one night last week where I thought I was going to DIE because my back hurt so bad.  That was a fun night…I think I was up every hour.  At least that was just one night.  But I’m back to needing to get up 2-3 or more times per night, which is really fun.

Symptoms:  I got my back to crack!  Woohoo!  She must have moved enough out of the way so I could do it.  Good Baby!

What I Miss:  Not having to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes-1 hour.  I’d even take every 1-2 hours at this point.

Cravings:  None.

Best Moment of the Week:  I had my first baby shower on Saturday!  I’ll have pictures up after I steal them from Kari.

What I’m Looking Forward To:  We’re going to Fargo this weekend for Christmas with my family and another shower…I suppose I should let my doctor know that.  Eh, oh well.  I can tell her at my appointment this week (now I’m to the every week appointments!)
