35 weeks

Pregnancy Highlights: January 1, 2011.  That’s weird.

How Far Along: 35 weeks.

Size of Baby:  She is a honeydew melon now.  She is supposed to be running out of space since she’s 5.25 lbs and over 18 inches long, but I don’t think she’s listening.  She seems to still think she has a lot of room and is taking full advantage of it.

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  I think the same.  Guess we’ll see what the doctor says on Tuesday!

Maternity Clothes:  I wore my one maternity dress when we went to dinner on our anniversary & I felt like I looked super-pregnant!

Gender:  Baby Girl!

Movement:  She must read this.  As soon as I wrote that she wasn’t kicking as much last week, just wiggling, she turned into crazy kicking baby.  She’s trying to punch & kick her way out this week.  I think she was thinking, “Hmm, maybe Daddy wants a tax break for 2010…eh, never mind.”

Sleep:  Decent-ish.  If you ignore the fact that (a) it’s uncomfortable, (b) crazy dreams (of the genres of crazy pregnancy dreams listed in What to Expect When You’re Expecting, I have had multiple dreams from all of them except one), and (c) every day I close at work, I am woken up by a call from the opener with questions!

Symptoms:  My back still hurts, and it won’t crack.  Who wants to get me a prenatal massage for…Epiphany?

What I Miss:  Sleeping comfortably, being able to sit comfortably in the car, etc.  And I have decided I’m not doing fitting rooms or go-backs at work anymore.  I now drop clothes & keys whenever I try, so why bother?!

Cravings:  None.

Best Moment of the Week:  Christmas!  I guess that was a week ago now, but you know…  It was our 5th anniversary on Tuesday.  That morning, after my meeting at work, I got a pedicure (birthday gift from my other managers!), and I didn’t realize how sore my feet & legs really were until then!  We celebrated by taking a nap after David got home from work, then going out to dinner.  I also made some wall art for the Baby’s room.  It’s not 100% done:  still awaiting a picture of her & her name across the top.  For those who are wondering, she *probably* has a name, but who knows?  It might not fit when she comes, so we’ll see.  I’ve tried to get her to kick in response to one or the other, but she’s being uncooperative in that regard.

What I’m Looking Forward To:  Baby shower #1 next Saturday!  (If you’d like to come, talk to Kristen!)

Due to Christmas, I’m combining weeks 33 & 34 in one post…that’s late.  Oops.  Oh well.

33 weeks

Pregnancy Highlights: December 25, 2010.

How Far Along: 34 weeks.

Size of Baby:  Last week, Baby was a pineapple.  Now she is a cantaloupe.  She’s gaining about 1/2 lb. per week, so she weighs about 4.75 pounds now!

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  Thanks to a strict McDonalds/Starbucks/Chipotle diet last Monday & Tuesday, I was able to gain some weight!  I have now officially gained 4 lbs since the week before Thanksgiving!  I think I’m up to +21 lbs (according to the doctor) total.

Maternity Clothes:  I got my maternity jeans last week!  I like the no-button-to-dig-into-Baby.  They’re a size smaller than my “normal” size, and I could have actually gone down another size.  Who does that?!

Gender:  Baby Girl!

Movement:  I think she’s getting bored.  She likes Christmas cookies & Thanksgiving food, and she gets excited about those.  Beyond that, she’s wiggly, but not as kicky except at night.

Sleep:  Still not incredibly comfortable + wacky dreams.  And I need my back to crack, but it won’t.  Ugh!

Symptoms:  No change.

What I Miss:  Picking things up comfortably (again).

Cravings:  None.

Best Moment of the Week:  Christmas!

What I’m Looking Forward To:  Getting more things ready for Baby!  We got our travel system for Christmas (Thanks Grandpa & Grandma Helfinstine!), and I’m going to work on her room some more on my days off this week (wall decorations!).  AND Tuesday (December 28) is our 5th anniversary!!

2010 has brought all sorts of excitement to the Helfinstine household.

vacationDavid & Sarah

David continues to work at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis while he works on his B.S. in Medical Laboratory Science from Argosy.

Sarah also continues to sell things at aerie at MOA—no location change this year!

In July, we spent a week with David’s family on vacation at Sunset Beach, NC.

We also maintained our annual MN State Fair with the Haugruds tradition over Labor Day weekend, going on what turned out to be a record-breaking attendance day!

bonesBones

Bones, our Lab/Welsh Corgi puppy, joined our family on February 4.  She turned one-year-old in September.

We think she may also be part rabbit, as she jumps about 2 feet in the air when it’s her dinnertime, and part cat (as in scaredy-cat), as she is scared of just about everything the first time she encounters it.  The exceptions are the vacuum and paper; she runs away from both of them still!

Her repertoire of tricks include ‘sit,’ ‘down,’ ‘shake,’ and ‘speak.’  If she’s really excited, she’ll try to do them all at once.

Baby

On May 27, we found out our most exciting news of the year:

Baby Helfinstine will be arriving in February!

In September, we found out that we’re having a girl!  Her expected due date is February 5, but Bones is hoping she’s born on her adoption day (one day earlier).

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas!

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,
The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

32 weeks

Pregnancy Highlights: December 11, 2010.  (Not actually that date anymore, but we’ll talk about my blizzard experience in another post!)

How Far Along: 32 weeks.

Size of Baby:  Baby is now a jicama, weighing in at 3.75 lbs.  She’s around the same length:  about 18 inches (depending on what website you look at, she’s anywhere from 16.7-19 inches this week!).

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  My scale at home shows that I’ve gained a total of 23 lbs, but it starts at 3 lbs instead of 0, so I guess that means a total of 20?  I don’t really know.  I think I’ll stick with the story that Baby is eating all my food, so regardless of how much I eat, she takes it all.

Maternity Clothes:  Still the same…I’m sticking with my regular clothes.  Oh, I guess I am buying more size medium shirts now as opposed to small, if that counts.  We pre-registered online last night for the hospital and were entertained by the list of what to bring to the hospital:  I’m supposed to bring clothes that fit when I was about 5 months pregnant.  That would be different from my clothes now, how?

Gender:  Baby Girl!

Movement:  She is still crazy.  When she is not entertained by whatever I’m doing, she goes really low and stretches out.  I think it’s because she knows it’s not incredibly comfortable for me.  At work we have…fantastic entertainment outside our store some days, when miscellaneous bands, singers, and/or musicians play in the Sears court.  Baby is not a fan of those, especially the loud bands.  She moves to whatever side of me is furthest from the door and kicks!

Sleep:  Not incredibly comfortable + wacky dreams.

Symptoms:  No change.

What I Miss:  Hmm, can’t really think of anything for this week.  I guess just not having to remember my stomach takes up more space when trying to get through narrow spaces!

Cravings:  None.

Best Moment of the Week:  Blizzard!  OR…not so much.  We did get a good chunk of our Christmas shopping taken care of, so that’s good!

What I’m Looking Forward To:  Christmas!  Also, I’m still trying to teach Baby to kick on command.  I want her to kick Bones!  She’s done it several times, but Bones either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care.  Bones does enjoy snuggling with Baby though, see??

Pregnancy Highlights: December 4, 2010.  (Also my birthday!  I am now old.)

How Far Along: 31 weeks.

Size of Baby:  There are no individual fruits or vegetables the size of Baby this week, so she is the weight of four oranges.  I do not eat oranges (or orange juice), so that doesn’t actually help me, although I’m sure it would be helpful for most people.  That’s about 3.5 lbs, and she’s getting tall:  about 18 inches!

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  So apparently I am the only person who loses weight over Thanksgiving…I lost 3 oz. between my last appointment and the one I had this week.  How does that work?!  But I’m still in the realm of acceptable weight gain, having gained 17 lbs. since my first doctor’s appointment (about 20 from original).

Maternity Clothes:  Regular jeans held up with the bella band still working moderately well, but I change into pj pants as soon as I get home!

Gender:  Baby Girl!

Movement:  She is crazy.  The doctor said she still has lots of room, so she decided to take advantage of that and is now all over the place.  She figured out how to punch me in the ribs, stomach, diaphragm, and bladder, so that’s been…fun.  She’s also been doing complete somersaults and sticking random body parts out so I look like I have weird tumors on my stomach!

Sleep:  Difficult to get comfortable.

Symptoms:  No change.

What I Miss:  Being able to get back off the couch/bed/etc. with minimal effort!

Cravings:  None.

Best Moment of the Week:  My birthday was Saturday (it’s now Sunday), so that was fun!  My parents and brother were able to make it down for the weekend and we had Christmas baking fun at David’s parents’ house on Saturday!  I also got a phone call from my other brother, who is currently in Germany, on my birthday.  On the baby side, on Thursday night I was lying on the couch & Baby decided to stick her foot or something out over my belly button, resulting in my stomach looking very strange.  Then she rolled from one side to the other, which was completely visible from the outside.  She was rather entertaining that evening!

What I’m Looking Forward To:  Eating Christmas cookies!  And I suppose ordering our Christmas cards…I should probably get on that one.

I’ll have pictures up later; uploading them from yesterday would require my getting off the couch, which we’ve already established is not the easiest thing to do anymore!

30 weeks

Pregnancy Highlights: November 27, 2010.

How Far Along: 30 weeks.

Size of Baby:  Baby is a large cabbage this week, which, unlike the squash, I have a slim-to-no chance of eating this week.  She could also be a sweater:  not as tasty.  She should weigh about 3 pounds and be around 16 inches long.

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  On Thanksgiving morning, I was +20 from original.  I haven’t felt like checking since then, for obvious reasons.

Maternity Clothes:  Still not doing that.  I wore rollovers on Thanksgiving and we had pj party at work on Friday and Saturday (jealous??  What I’m wearing in the picture is what I wore to work today!).

Gender:  Baby Girl!

Movement:  About the same.  She likes Thanksgiving food, though!  She was excited about that.

Sleep:  Now I’ve started the wacky dreams, along with waking up a couple times a night.  How fun is that?!

Symptoms:  No change.

What I Miss:  Probably mentioned before, but being allowed to lift things (like boxes of gift boxes & bags to restock the cash wrap) and also being able to bend over comfortably to pick stuff up!

Cravings:  None.

Best Moment of the Week:  I have graduated from “Are you pregnant?” to “When are you due?” or “Is it a boy or girl?” or “Is this your first?”.  Yay, I must look pregnant now!

What I’m Looking Forward To:  #1:  Monday off = decorate for Christmas!  #2:  my birthday on Saturday!

And also for your viewing pleasure/amusement:  Bones watching her baby sister!

Pregnancy Highlights: November 20, 2010.

How Far Along: 29 weeks:  Month 7

Sorry this one is coming out late…I was going to write this post after we got home last night from celebrating Kari’s birthday with David’s family, but we had a lovely ice storm/freezing rain/etc., and it ended up taking almost 4 hours for me to get home.  I averaged about 10 mph on the way home, spending an hour stopped by an entrance ramp just north of 494 (entertaining to watch people drive back up the ramp in reverse or attempt a 27-point turn to go up the ramp forwards.  I also enjoyed the people wandering around outside their cars trying to figure out why we were stopped…they slid the whole way back to their cars.  I think we have our answer.)  I spent another hour driving the 3 miles from that entrance to the lovely bridge with lots of people stuck on it, where I hung out for another hour while really smart people just stopped in the middle of the road, blocking all the lanes.  It was fun.  Poor Kristen & Chad were stuck for another 1 to 1 1/2 hours!  Ugh.  At least Baby and I got to spend some quality time together.  She seemed to enjoy the whole experience, as she was having a great time kicking and punching.  Or maybe she was yelling at the really smart people in her own way!

Size of Baby:  Baby is a butternut squash this week, which excitingly enough, we ate for dinner last night!  (Sorry, Baby!)  She’s almost 16 inches long and weighs 2 1/2 pounds, although considering she actually weighed over 2.5 lbs last week, I’d guess she weighs closer to 3.  Since we’re now in month 7, she’ll be a squash of some type all month according to this website!  Or a basketball.

Total Weight Gain/Loss:  I gained 4.2 lbs since my last appointment.  Since I’m no good at actually weighing myself consistently, I’m not sure what the gain was any individual week.  So I’m at a total of +16.6 lbs since my first appointment, about +19 total.

Maternity Clothes:  I really need to get on that.  My jeans are getting less and less comfortable, and since that’s what I wear everyday, not a great situation.  I wore my first maternity shirt to floorset.  David laughed at me because it looks no different from any of my other shirts…just a long-sleeved T that happened to be slightly longer!

Gender:  Baby Girl!

Movement:  In the past couple days she’s started moving around more throughout the day, rather than just when I want to sleep.

Sleep:  I miss sleeping normal.  I built myself a nest a few months ago with pillows (sorry, Mom & Dad, you’ll have to bring pillows on Wednesday unless you want to share the one I left in the guestroom!).  Sleeping on my back is still most comfortable even though I know I’m supposed to be on my left side (but then my left leg gets sore!).

Symptoms:  No change.

What I Miss:  Being cold at work.  Not that I enjoy being cold, but it’s cold in the store; just a fact of life.  Yesterday I had to take off my cardigan because I was so hot!  Everyone wanted to know why I was just wearing a tank top…because I was hot!  Goodness people.  We have how many people in the store plus Christmas lights in addition to the regular lights plus I’m running all over the place.  What do you expect?

Cravings:  None.

Best Moment of the Week:  Baby didn’t give me diabetes!  Woo!  And the doctor says I’m measuring perfect & Baby sounds great (not incredibly exciting, but always nice to hear)!

What I’m Looking Forward To:  Thanksgiving!  (Not Baby-related, but it’s a day off of work, so I like it!)
