Due to our work schedules, we had Abby’s birthday party on Saturday. My family came down for the weekend [as opposed to that weekend last year, when we went to Fargo for the baby shower]. On Friday night, my parents, David, Abby, & I went to Famous Dave’s, where Abby attempted to eat as much of my meal as possible. Apparently she also enjoys Georgia Chopped Pork & Drunkin’ Apples.
I made 10 dozen mini cupcakes that night & frosted them in the morning [along with decorating] while Abby napped. NOM.
Abby was not terribly thrilled that I woke her up for [horrors!] a bath before her party, but she quickly cheered up when she realized that everyone was still there to play with her.
After delicious tacos (courtesy of David), Abby got to open her presents! She was very excited about all of them, especially the cards…who knew that cards were so fascinating & delicious?!
Then it was cake time! I had 3 full sized cupcakes, so Abby got one of those. She was not too sure what to do with it; she knew it was food, but she wasn’t sure where to begin until I broke it in half for her.
Then she shoved half of it into her mouth and INHALED the cupcake. NOM. She got a little messy, but probably about 90% of it ended up in her mouth. Plus I think that’s kind of the point of a 1 year birthday party!
Saturday evening, after church with David’s family, Abby got her first restaurant meal for herself—grilled cheese at Panera! She ate half of the sandwich [we saved the rest for dinner the next day] & all of the yogurt. How she is still in the 2nd percentile, I have no clue. Girl can EAT.
Thanks to all who came to Abby’s party &/or sent gifts…she loves all her new toys & clothes & books & she’s excited to actually turn 1 on Friday!
On Sunday, we (along with lots of other people) celebrated Father’s Day.
“Happy Father’s Day, Daddy! I am wearing a fluffy flower on my head so I look extra cute!”
Unlike lots of other people, we also celebrated David’s birthday.
His family came over for dinner: delicious steak, courtesy of his parents; yummy fruit salad, courtesy of Kristen’s purchasing abilities and Chad’s cutting abilities; and excellent side dishes, courtesy of Daddy/Birthday Boy.
I made a red velvet cake (with cream cheese frosting, of course), and managed to fit the correct number of candles on it (30). Usually I just put two of one color and seven/eight/nine of another color to signify the age; however, that doesn’t really work when it ends in a zero! Plus, this way I got to use 1.25 packages of candles.
Check out all the smoke from the candles!
Abby wanted to stay awake for all the fun, but eating applesauce for the first time wore her out. And turned her into an awkwardly colored alien compared to Auntie Kristen. She has also decided in the past couple weeks that she likes her pacifier. Huh.
Please ignore my wacky hair, but notice the cute babies on the fridge: Gabe & Levi.
Moral of the story: Abby was cute; we had yummy food; David got presents; his dad also got presents.
Stay tuned for Abby’s five month update.
The end.
Abby got to meet all of her immediate extended family who currently reside in this country while she was in the hospital. (She will be meeting her Uncle Timothy at a later date, when he comes back home from Germany!)
We got to go home on Saturday afternoon (after getting another bath, which wasn’t quite as terrible as the first one). Abby wore her cute outfit she got from Grandma & Grandpa Helfinstine at Christmas. The onesie says “I love Daddy.” She was really excited about the hat I put on her…the flower was bigger than her head! So we decided to swap out the flower for a smaller one, amid gales of laughter from everyone in the room. Saturday was also the day that marked 38 weeks of pregnancy (if she hadn’t been born yet, of course!)
Sunday was spent relaxing at home, along with thinking deep thoughts while napping.

On Monday, we went to the clinic to get Abby’s heel poked to check her bilirubin, since she was our little yellow baby by then. (And she was cranky, which isn’t normal for her.) Grandma and Grandpa Helfinstine brought Bones home, but then we got the call from the doctor saying we needed to go back to the hospital because her bilirubin was a 19.6! Poor Bones was confused by (a) Abby’s noises and (b) coming home and then having everyone leave again! After David brought us to the hospital, he went back home to get Bones and bring her back to his parents’, meeting his dad halfway. Bones got an extended vacation with her cousins!
When we got to the hospital, Abby’s bilirubin was at 19.9! The nurses told us Abby would need to be under the lights at least 24 hours, and we should plan on her being there for two days. Poor baby girl’s weight had dropped to 5 lbs, 5.6 oz due to the bilirubin causing her to be too drowsy to eat, which then causes her bilirubin to go up (it goes out the way other things go out…into the diaper), so she didn’t eat, so it went up, etc. She had an overhead light, a side light, and a biliblanket to start with, along with an IV.
She got to hang out under the lights around the clock, coming out every three hours to eat and get her vitals checked. They took away the side light on Tuesday morning because her bili had come down to 13.1, and her IV came out as well (although the hook up stayed on just in case).
She was nice and snuggly warm in there, and she kept posing like she was at the beach on an inner tube! Abby normally doesn’t like being naked (good girl!), but she was okay with it in the isolette!
On Wednesday morning, her bilirubin was down to 8.1, so we would get to go home that day! She was approximately back up to her original discharge weight (5 lbs, 13.8 oz) and was much happier and much less yellow! We were very glad to go home again, especially since our accommodations the second time around were not what they were the first time: we had a room in maternity the first night, which we got kicked out of the next morning, and then they found us a room in another part of the hospital around dinnertime, which we were also kicked out of the next morning! We were especially ready to go home by Wednesday since we went to the hospital (the first time) the previous Wednesday evening; it was really fun to spend 5 out of 7 nights in the hospital…
Wednesday night, Auntie Kristen came over for a bit and got to help give Abby her first bath at home! It was originally scheduled for Monday, but our trip to the hospital changed those plans. Abby thought her bath at home was a little better than at the hospital, but she wasn’t too sure about it.
Abby was also not sure what to think about the photo shoot she was subjected to after her bath!
Thursday was Abby’s one-week birthday! We celebrated with funfetti cupcakes (with pink frosting!) and more pictures! [And Papa Murphy’s with the s’mores dessert pizza for Mommy, Daddy, and Grandma Haugrud!] Abby celebrated by showing off her skills at spinning herself around.
Pregnancy Highlights: December 4, 2010. (Also my birthday! I am now old.)
How Far Along: 31 weeks.
Size of Baby: There are no individual fruits or vegetables the size of Baby this week, so she is the weight of four oranges. I do not eat oranges (or orange juice), so that doesn’t actually help me, although I’m sure it would be helpful for most people. That’s about 3.5 lbs, and she’s getting tall: about 18 inches!
Total Weight Gain/Loss: So apparently I am the only person who loses weight over Thanksgiving…I lost 3 oz. between my last appointment and the one I had this week. How does that work?! But I’m still in the realm of acceptable weight gain, having gained 17 lbs. since my first doctor’s appointment (about 20 from original).
Maternity Clothes: Regular jeans held up with the bella band still working moderately well, but I change into pj pants as soon as I get home!
Gender: Baby Girl!
Movement: She is crazy. The doctor said she still has lots of room, so she decided to take advantage of that and is now all over the place. She figured out how to punch me in the ribs, stomach, diaphragm, and bladder, so that’s been…fun. She’s also been doing complete somersaults and sticking random body parts out so I look like I have weird tumors on my stomach!
Sleep: Difficult to get comfortable.
Symptoms: No change.
What I Miss: Being able to get back off the couch/bed/etc. with minimal effort!
Cravings: None.
Best Moment of the Week: My birthday was Saturday (it’s now Sunday), so that was fun! My parents and brother were able to make it down for the weekend and we had Christmas baking fun at David’s parents’ house on Saturday! I also got a phone call from my other brother, who is currently in Germany, on my birthday. On the baby side, on Thursday night I was lying on the couch & Baby decided to stick her foot or something out over my belly button, resulting in my stomach looking very strange. Then she rolled from one side to the other, which was completely visible from the outside. She was rather entertaining that evening!
What I’m Looking Forward To: Eating Christmas cookies! And I suppose ordering our Christmas cards…I should probably get on that one.
I’ll have pictures up later; uploading them from yesterday would require my getting off the couch, which we’ve already established is not the easiest thing to do anymore!
Well, it’s been almost 3 months since I’ve posted anything, so I’ll try to get caught up & do a better job in the future! Now that I’m no longer working 40+ hours a week for free along with 25 hours a week paid, I have a little more time on my hands!
I’ll start with where I left off…end of January. After finishing up grading tests & end of quarter stuff, I was done with student teaching. That evening was David’s cousin Jake’s wedding.
That weekend, my parents came down for a friend’s wedding. Philip came with & demonstrated his Guitar Hero skills…apparently he played all summer & can beat the game on expert or something. I don’t really know–I guess David & his cousin Caleb were both really impressed. After church & lunch on Sunday, we decided to kill time by looking at town homes & found great ones in Farmington (just up the street from David’s parents). However, it turns out that school loans from Northwestern, UMN, Argosy, and UWRF do not equal a good enough debt-to-income ratio for us to get a mortgage.
So that ends January. On to February…
Valentine’s day…we went to sushi, which apparently takes reservations for V-day. We were not expecting that (since it’s never busy). They found us a table practically in the kitchen…and proceeded to forget about us all night. Not so great.
My flower girl turned 6 at the end of February. She was super-excited to be turning 6 on February 28, while Michael (from church in Fargo)wasn’t turning “6″ until February 29! She thought it was really funny that they could both be turning 6, but he was so much bigger than her…nobody told her that he was actually turning 24, but since he was born on Leap Day, he had only had 6 actually birthdays.
The end of March brought Easter & Kristen’s birthday! Since her birthday was the day after Easter, we celebrated them together after church with brunch, decorating eggs, watching Enchanted, & cake!
David’s been working random shifts (it seems like). He had a 4 or so week run of night shifts…10pm to 7am! Last week he worked evenings, his “normal” shift. Next he’ll be going to days to finish up his remaining training. Maybe someday we’ll see each other again…
Well, that’s about all I can think of, & I’m sure you’re sick of reading this (if anyone’s even reading it anyway!).
