05 Aug 2010 vacation.

I have two days off in a row, so I might as well get caught up on a little more blog-action, huh?  When my days off are at different times in the week, I typically have more ‘stuff’ to do—laundry, cleaning, running errands, etc.—but when they’re together, I try to get it done all in one day.  Of course, then I’m left with a “what should I do?” day!  This is even more true this week as my OB appointment yesterday was at 8:20, so I had to get myself out of bed at a ‘decent’ hour.  Now that I’m done with the first trimester, apparently I’m supposed to get some energy back.  It seems that might be the case as I didn’t need to take multiple naps yesterday like I usually do when I get up relatively early!

We spent a week with David’s family, including some of his extended family, at Sunset Beach, NC.  The Friday before we left I ‘graduated’ from my wonderful Get-You-Pregnant doctor and got to stop taking my lovely progesterone injections!  (Wouldn’t all that have been fun to get through airport security?!?)  Bones went on a vacation of her own starting Saturday evening, staying with a coworker of David’s mom.

We left our house at 3am (SICK) Sunday for our 5:20am flight to Atlanta, then arrived in Charleston sometime after 1.  After a lovely 3 hour drive, we arrived at Sunset Beach!  It was lovely and hot there, as expected.  It rained every day, but it was about the time we’d have been heading back in anyway, so it didn’t cut out too much of our beach time!

For some reason, we had lots of inflatable sea creatures.  So pictures were taken with them.  Meet Wally the Walrus and Sasha the Shark (she has eyelashes; that’s how you know she’s a girl)38460_1494238846338_1545063112_1165752_1442120_n

Along with spending one evening just waiting for and eating dinner (thanks for the 2 hour wait, Burro Loco), we went to Barefoot Landing and Callahan’s (shopping), mini golf, and How Sweet It Is (delicious ice cream where you can get 2 flavors on a “single”)!

The Helfinstine/Boysens during mini golf!  Kristen and I won.  We were playing a different way, where you were aiming for a high score.

We also took exciting pictures at the gazebo by the pier.

On Saturday, we made the exciting 3 hour drive back to Charleston, stopping for delicious Chick-Fil-A on the way!  This time we flew to Detroit, where we got to go through the creepy seizure-inducing tunnel, and then wait an extra hour (on top of our 3-ish hour layover) because the flight attendants weren’t there yet.  We finally got home sometime around midnight, ‘ready’ to go back to class (David) and work (me) the next day!

16 Oct 2009 Last Days of Summer

Once again I find myself having to catch up with all you readers my mother.  (Does anyone else read this?!)

My parents and brother came to visit us two consecutive weekends at the end of the summer.  The first weekend we went to the Walker Art Center (2 free tickets courtesy of Museum Adventure Pass, a program the libraries here are running).  The “boys” enjoyed climbing on the one thing people are allowed to climb on, especially Philip, who made it most of the way to the top, then slid down. (I’m not sure that this is an activity sanctioned by the Sculpture Garden, but nobody yelled, so I guess he was okay.)

The second weekend they came down, we went to the MN State Fair, where we experienced a variety of culinary delights and some interesting people watching.

While my parents and I were eating our Uff-Da Brats in the Food Building, the people sharing our “table” with us stared at us and our food, and asked what it was repeatedly:

“What’s that?!
“Where did you get that?”
“What’s in it?”
“Is it any good?

This final question was asked very incredulously.  Philip returned with his own food, Falafel-on-a-Stick, [this was after he had already eaten a Spam-Burger] where he was greeted with the same Spanish–Minnesotan?–Inquisition.  I take that back; they must have been from Wisconsin or Iowa.  Then my dad went to get some more food–fried smelt–and, guess what?  Same thing.  Seriously people, if you don’t want to experience bizarre, fried, anything-on-a-stick, don’t bother coming to the State Fair!

Philip got Veggie Fries next:  “Fun on the Outside, Healthy on the Inside.”

Along with eating delicious cheese curds, we did some actual fair-type-stuff.  I decided that maybe we should check out some of the animals, so we found some cute baby goats and piglets!

There was also an amazing ride where you were strapped into a giant hamster ball and bungee’d into the air.  If only it didn’t cost like $25 for a 4-second ride…

Along with the fun of the WAC and State Fair, we had some fun game-playing time at our house.  Biggest hit:  In a Pickle, a game David got for Christmas.  When we played it with his family over Christmas, it seemed really weird, but we re-read the directions and set up more strict guidelines, and it worked a lot better.  Basically the game consists of cards with nouns on them, and you play on top or under the cards based on what it can be “in.”  Such as, the TURKEY is in the SOUP; followed by the SOUP is in my STOMACH.  Dad cheated by having outrageous cards, like LOVE, SOUL, and DANGER.  He won many final rounds by having the KANGAROO be in LOVE and the AIRPLANE be in DANGER.

That concludes my summer.  Stay tuned for a “fall” update (since it’s already snowed, I’m pretty sure we skipped over fall this year and are already in winter).

29 Dec 2006 Dolphins!

Not the Miami football kind. The real thing! We went on a boat tour of the area around Sanibel Island today. Just as we were about to give up, we saw about eight dolphins in a group. We followed them, and they started playing in the wake of the boat. Here’s some video of the momentous occasion. Enjoy! Plus, more photos in the photo album!

01 Aug 2005 Vacation

We got back from vacation Saturday afternoon. It was great! We spent the first half of the week with my family up at the resort near Fergus, then we flew out to Myrtle Beach, where we spent the rest of the week at Sunset Beach with Dave’s family. It was the first time I’d been to the Atlantic Ocean, and the first time I’d actually swum in an ocean (we just splashed around in the Pacific last summer). I only got a little burned, which is great for 3 full days out on the beach! Wednesday night we went to Barefoot Landing and got yummy salt water taffy, and Friday night we went to Broadway at the Beach and I got a bear! I’m sure Dave will put some pictures up of the vacation as soon as he gets around to it. Love you!
