29 Oct 2009 Wedding Bells at Northwestern
 |  Category: Miscellaneous, Sarah  | Tags: , ,  | 2 Comments

Congratulations Kate and Jordan!

1

Kate, one of my wonderful college friends, got married a few weeks ago in beautiful Nazareth chapel at Northwestern.  Despite going there for 4 years and going to multiple chapels, recitals, and having many tours through Naz chapel, this was the first (and, most likely, only) wedding I’ve been to there.

Kate was, as expected, a beautiful bride.

Marie was able to come from Denver and spend the weekend.  We had fun watching movies and having post-wedding pizza and ice cream!

Monday morning, we awoke to this:

snow 10.12.2009

Poor Marie’s flight back was delayed over an hour!

However, I can’t write a whole post about that.  So, let me tell you about a pre-wedding event.

A couple weeks before the wedding, Kate’s soon-to-be in-laws had a shower for her.  Since I had the day off, I decided I might as well go since it was only about 15 minutes from my house.  That was an exciting time.

It went approximately as expected:
awkward small talk with people I don’t know
eat food
more awkward small talk
eat more food
watch Kate open presents
still more awkward small talk
leave

I, if you didn’t notice, am not a fan of small talk.

(Goes with the territory of my apparent Myers-Briggs type, INTJ:
“[T]hey tend to have little patience and less understanding of such things as small talk [...]“)

I’m pretty sure every conversation I had went something like this:

Random Shower-Goer:  Hi, I’m [Helga/Bertha/LuAnn].  How do you know the bride?
Me:  I’m Sarah.  We went to college together.
RSG:  Oh, isn’t that nice.  So you know Jordan’s family?
Me:  No, not really.
RSG:  Oh…well, I’m [Marlene/Belinda/Sherry]‘s friend from church.  Our kids have been friends since birth.
Me:  That’s great.  I’m sure Kate and Jordan appreciate your being here. [That reference did not help me at all, since I don't know Marlene/Belinda/Sherry either.]
RSG:  So you’re from the Cities?
Me:  No, I came here for school.
RSG:  Oh, you’re in school?
Me:  No, I graduated a few years ago with Kate.  [didn't I say this earlier?]

At this point, the conversation would inevitably go in one of two directions (both if I was really lucky), either questioning me about my job and why I’m not using my degrees, or asking me about David, his job, and why we don’t have children yet.  Fantastic.

I must say, though, that the food was delicious, the hostesses were very gracious, and Kate received lots of wonderful gifts.  I just don’t like small talk.

04 May 2008 3 month update

Well, it’s been almost 3 months since I’ve posted anything, so I’ll try to get caught up & do a better job in the future! Now that I’m no longer working 40+ hours a week for free along with 25 hours a week paid, I have a little more time on my hands!

I’ll start with where I left off…end of January. After finishing up grading tests & end of quarter stuff, I was done with student teaching. That evening was David’s cousin Jake’s wedding.

That weekend, my parents came down for a friend’s wedding. Philip came with & demonstrated his Guitar Hero skills…apparently he played all summer & can beat the game on expert or something. I don’t really know–I guess David & his cousin Caleb were both really impressed. After church & lunch on Sunday, we decided to kill time by looking at town homes & found great ones in Farmington (just up the street from David’s parents). However, it turns out that school loans from Northwestern, UMN, Argosy, and UWRF do not equal a good enough debt-to-income ratio for us to get a mortgage.

So that ends January. On to February…

Valentine’s day…we went to sushi, which apparently takes reservations for V-day. We were not expecting that (since it’s never busy). They found us a table practically in the kitchen…and proceeded to forget about us all night. Not so great.

My flower girl turned 6 at the end of February. She was super-excited to be turning 6 on February 28, while Michael (from church in Fargo)wasn’t turning “6″ until February 29! She thought it was really funny that they could both be turning 6, but he was so much bigger than her…nobody told her that he was actually turning 24, but since he was born on Leap Day, he had only had 6 actually birthdays.

March didn’t start off too pleasantly. David’s grandma died at the beginning of the month, so instead of going to jury duty on March 10, I went to the funeral. It was different experiencing it as someone else’s grandparent & not my own.

The end of March brought Easter & Kristen’s birthday! Since her birthday was the day after Easter, we celebrated them together after church with brunch, decorating eggs, watching Enchanted, & cake!

In April I finally got my teaching licenses! Stupid paperwork. I am now officially licensed to teach grades 1-6 in Minnesota & 1-8 in Wisconsin. However, since it’s so close to the end of the school year & kids are so crazy at this time of year, I’m keeping on working at AE & I’ll apply for jobs as they start posting through the summer. Since the last floorset at work, I’ve been “acting stock supervisor” as one of my coworkers put it. I’m in charge of the back room until the next floorset, & I spent my first week back there hanging, sizing, & sorting out all the clearance & basically straightening it all up since our district manager & new regional manager were coming for a big visit. That week I also went up to St. Cloud with 2 of my managers to help finish setting up the new Aerie opening in their mall. We dressed all their bustforms (they’re not mannequins…they don’t have heads or limbs) & set their windows. We’re going to be opening our Aerie in September, so our DM wanted us to see what to expect or something.

David’s been working random shifts (it seems like). He had a 4 or so week run of night shifts…10pm to 7am! Last week he worked evenings, his “normal” shift. Next he’ll be going to days to finish up his remaining training. Maybe someday we’ll see each other again…

Well, that’s about all I can think of, & I’m sure you’re sick of reading this (if anyone’s even reading it anyway!).

24 Jul 2007 my life in fast-forward
 |  Category: Miscellaneous, Sarah, Work  | Tags: , ,  | Comments off

Since I haven’t posted in forever, quick recap of my life this summer:

end of May-beginning of June: Social Studies class. We played for 3 hours a day & had to write lesson plans due the next day. As with all my methods classes, easy A.

June: no class! Kristin & Marie came to the Cities for Leah’s wedding June 23, & it was lots of fun to see my friends again!

1st part of July: Exceptional Child class. Take notes for 3 hours a day–so fun. I ended up with 70 pages of class notes (handwritten) & almost 80 pages of book notes (typed). Lots of tests–my first grad class with actual tests! However, I discovered that no sleep=better grades! We had our Back-To-School floorset the weekend after 4th of July, so that completely screwed up my sleeping schedule. Working until 1:30 am is great when you have an 8 am class!

Middle of July: my store is getting a remodel & expansion…finally! I spent the last week of my Exceptional Child class taking 2 tests, writing a paper, & making a brochure, along with packing up the backroom at work for our move to our temp location, trying to get everything organized for the move, & attempting to get through as many boxes of shipment as possible to put on the floor since we have almost no stockroom in our temp store. Also, Heidi’s bridal shower & David’s parents’ block party. That was amusing–the cops came. We thought it was to arrest the neighbors or something neat for shooting off fireworks, being drunk, & letting their children run around. However, it turns out they just had nothing better to do so they decided to come visit the neighborhood.

This week…(technically last week, I guess) 7th Harry Potter book out! I stood in line for 10 minutes on Friday morning to get a wristband to hold my place in line (1st 300!) to get the book that night. After eating sushi, David dropped me off at Borders about 11:30 so I could get in line for the release. I got to jump ahead of the majority of the people & had my book before 12:45! Officially this week, now, my family’s vacation at Weslake. However, since David & I both have class, we were only up there for the weekend (where I read my book). I started my 3rd & final summer class, Psychology & Pedagogy of Literacy, today, along with finishing getting our temp store set up–the next couple months at work cannot go fast enough. Our current location is gross. The top third of the walls are painted lavendar, lime green, & mustard yellow. Ew. And it’s carpeted, so we have to vacuum. And we have neat plywood, shower-curtained fitting rooms. This BTS season will be amazing. Or not. This weekend is a college friend’s wedding, then Tim & Heidi’s in another 2 weeks. Then we’re done with weddings for the summer, only to begin again in the fall for Kristen’s!

Our wedding pictures are online from the photographer. We have full rights to do with them what we want, as long as no one makes prints from them! If you’d like to order prints from our wedding, there’s directions to do so on the site along with prices. The photos will be up indefinitely, but orders need to be in by the end of February. An FYI about the link: It’s on my computer here at home, so it may be down if the computer is restarting, or when we move. If you have problems with it, email me. Here’s the link:

29 Dec 2005 WE’RE MARRIED!
 |  Category: David, Sarah  | Tags: ,  | Comments off

Well, it’s official. We are now Mr. and Mrs. David Helfinstine. Pictures of the wedding will be up soon on the website, as soon as some are emailed to me. Here is a picture of part of the hotel room that we stayed at in Fargo at the Hotel Donaldson. The room was amazing and had great extra things like robes and slippers, truffles, and art by a local artist throughout the room. Hope you like them! We’ll post more when we’re in LA.
